How production design supports Narrative In this report I will be explaining how production design enhances the narrative of The Great Gatsby, American Psycho and Blade Runner by creating an intriguing world through set design, props, costumes and locations. Production design started when filmmakers began to realise that movies could be “a form of mass marketing” (Esperdy, 2007:198) during the 1920s and 30s. Leading to real architects being hired to design and create movie sets. This worked in favour of both filmmakers and architects; movies allowed the architects work to be exposed to audiences of “80 million people per week” (Esperdy, 2007:198), whilst filmmakers would receive beautiful set designs and have the power to set trends through their …show more content…
This scene is important as it begins unravelling the mystery that is Jay Gatsby as well as marking the beginning of Gatsby and Nick Carraway’s ‘bromance’. In the scenes that precede the Gatsby’s party scene, Nick Carraway retells his story of how he meets Jay Gatsby. He begins by describing how the 1920s were, how he moved to Long Island in a small cottage amongst the newly rich. We also meet Daisy and Tom buchanan; Daisy being Nick’s cousin. Just before the party scene Nick attends a ‘lunch date’ in town with Tom Buchanan which turns out to be a small party with Tom’s friends and mistress. During this scene Baz Luhrmann and production designer Catherine Martin begins to show how mysterious Gatsby is but also begins to reveal who he really is; in the sense that this party is the first impression that Nick gets of Gatsby’s world. The scene also begins to set the mood of the times, how the people were but also shows Gatsby’s wealth, life and
This “alter ego” is shown in many different ways but mostly revolving around Jay’s love for Daisy Buchanan. Jay requests that Nick shows Daisy and himself to have tea and after coming back from war, Jay had gone years without seeing the love of his life. Gatsby has Nicks house set up and beautifully decorated for the tea date with Daisy. While Nick and Gatsby were waiting for Daisy, Gatsby gets nervous and starts worrying that Daisy is going to blow him off. Finally, Daisy is dropped off by her driver and starts approaching the house. When Gatsby sees Daisy for the first time he has a nervous breakdown and runs out of the house into the rain. Daisy comes inside and Gatsby is nowhere to be found. Gatsby comes back inside, soaking wet and knocks on the door to see Daisy for the first time in years. When Jay sees her the first time, Nick; as narrator is quoted saying; “Now on the reaction, he was running down the an overwound clock.” This is a good description of the real Gatsby and how even he can get nervous. Gatsby has a heart full of love for Daisy and wanted the evening to go perfectly. This scene shows the love and strong emotion this larger than life character can have. Another scene in the movie shows Gatsby in a hotel room with Nick, Daisy, Tom Buchanan and Jordan. The scene goes from calm and civil to hostile and angry. Tom Buchanan (Daisy’s formal husband) and Gatsby (Daisy’s true
As the summer goes on, Nick gets invited to one of Gatsby’s big parties. He meets Jordan at the party and they meet Gatsby himself, a young man, a great smile, and tells everyone “old sport”. Later on in the party Gatsby asks to talk to Jordan Baker alone. Nick learns that the parties were all to get and impress Daisy. Gatsby asks Nick to invite Daisy over to his to tea, so Gatsby can meet her. When Daisy and Gatsby meet each other for the first time in five years it starts off awkward, then they start talking to each other. Gatsby tells her about how rich he is now and invites her over to his house. Daisy and Gatsby then begin the affair between each other as their relationship grows. Later, Gatsby get invited to Daisy’s house where Tom starts
Nick Carraway had just moved from the Middle East into a part of New York called West Egg where people of new wealth lived and he had his cousin Daisy who lived in the East Egg with her husband Tom Buchanan which is where people of old money lived. Near where Nick lives is also where Gatsby's mansion is located. In the beginning Nick always notices that Gatsby would
Throughout F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald uses an ensemble of characters to portray different aspects of the 1920s. The characters’ occupations and lifestyles represent the corruption, carefreeness, and prosperity of the Roaring Twenties. Perhaps most striking of this ensemble is the pompous bigot Tom Buchanan and the novel’s namesake Jay Gatsby. Set in the fictional towns of West Egg and East Egg on Long Island, New York, in the summer of 1922, the novel revolves around the protagonist Nick Carraway when he moves to West Egg. Upon arriving, he reconnects with his cousin Daisy Buchanan, and her husband Tom. He also encounters his mysterious neighbor Jay Gatsby, and eventually learns that Gatsby is an admirer of
The theme at the heart of the novel “The Great Gatsby” by F Scott Fitzgerald lies in the doomed relationship between the protagonist, Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan. Narrated by Nick Carraway, the friend of Gatsby’s whom Gatsby finally confides in at the most tragic moment of his life, the story unfolds against the backdrop of the roaring 20’s.
“In his blue gardens men and women came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars” (Fitzgerald 39). In his character, his relationships, and his gatherings, Jay Gatsby epitomized the illusion of a perfect romance. When Gatsby and Daisy met in 1917, he was searching for money, but ended up profoundly falling in love with her. “[H]e set out for gold and stumbled upon a dream” (Ornstein 37). Only a few weeks after meeting one another, Gatsby had to leave for war, which led to a separation between the two for nearly five years. As “war-torn lovers” Gatsby and Daisy reach the quintessential ideal of archetypical romance. When Gatsby returned from the war, his goal was to rekindle the relationship he once had with Daisy. In order to do this, he believed he would have to work hard to gain new wealth and a new persona. “Jay Gatsby loses his life even though he makes his millions because they are not the kind of safe, respectable money that echoes in Daisy’s lovely voice” (Ornstein 36). Gatsby then meets Daisy’s cousin, Nick Carraway, who helps to reunite the pair. Finally being brought together after years of separation, Gatsby stops throwing the extravagant parties at his home, and “to preserve [Daisy’s] reputation, [he] empties his mansion of lights and servants” (Ornstein 37). Subsequent to their reconciliation, Tom Buchanan, Daisy’s husband, begins to reveal sordid information about Gatsby’s career which causes Daisy to
Paying college athletes should be allowed because of their hard work on and off the field or court. According to Andy Hutchins on alligatorarmy.com Floridas football schedule is waking up at 6am to 9pm of class and practice every day. In those days there is no time for jobs for these athletes. Most of there days are working, eating, and resting, and as well paying for there education. If this sports thing doesnt work for these athletes they would have to get a job and have still pay for college, so they would have a late start to start paying off there fees.
Exploring Poetic Devices in “Track 5: Summertime” by Jericho Brown “Track 5: Summertime” from Jericho Brown ’s Please, recipient of the American Book Award, was written for and performed by Janis Joplin, a blues singer known for extreme emotionalism, her untamable voice, and portrayals of hardships tied to her personal experiences (Brackett 1). The title, “Summertime,” references the popular jazz standard that originated from Porgy and Bess, a folk opera by George Gershwin, a significant American composer of the 20th century. Notably, in the Porgy and Bess, “Summertime” is used as a “reminiscence theme” that ironically juxtaposes the dramatism that surrounds it, as the gentle lyrics of the lullaby appear during times of hardship, interweaving
The 1920’s was an era for being easy-going, partying, and investing in the stock market. An era such as this created a perfect setting for “The Great Gatsby” by using the dreamlike of the age to create the beautiful drama of Jay, Daisy, and Tom. Likewise, Nick Carraway proves that his persona is the only one carrying the characteristics of a legendary confidante.
Without even meeting Gatsby, Nick delves into a world of delusion and carelessness that marks Gatsby’s party, emphasizing how just mere taste of extravagance and wealth can have such a
Nick meets Gatsby by accident when he starts talking to someone who seems to be a regular partygoer. When Gatsby reveals who he is and smiles, Nick remarks that Gatsby’s smile held a “quality of eternal reassurance” (48). Nick finds an amazing compassion in Gatsby that he has never seen before. He believes there is “something gorgeous” in Gatsby’s composition that makes him untouchable and magical (2). This first look at Gatsby convinces Nick immediately that he is interesting and kind enough to build a connection
Here Tom introduces Myrtle Wilson, his side chick. Nick attempts to leave the party but instead gets drunk. In the morning he wakes up at his house but doesn't remember how he got there. Carraway is neighbors to a man by the name of Jay Gatsby. Gatsby was born into a poor family but in the end got lucky and is now one of the richest on Long Island. Gatsby is a mysterious man. He throws parties every weekend, yet no one gets an invitation. Everyone and anyone shows up to these parties but no one has a clue who Gatsby is or what he looks like. One day Nick gets an invitation to one of Gatsby’s famous parties. While at the party he gets into conversation with a man about the battle at Argonne Forest. Later in the conversation the man reveals himself as Jay Gatsby. Not to long later Gatsby request to speak to a girl, Jordan, a good friend of Daisy. Jordan reveals to Nick that Gatsby and Daisy know each
The Ku Klux Klan originated in the South and spread across the nation; during the early twentieth century, the KKK had approximately four million members throughout the country. Their members occupied many political influences in some states such as Oregon, Indiana, and Colorado. In the summer of 1868, Klan achieved part of their goal which was to defeat Southern Blacks; but didn’t succeed that well in carrying out their social aim during the reconstruction era, however; they later spread throughout Georgia. Then again, a Georgia Republican organizer was killed on March 31st, 1868; and because of his death, KKK organized terrorist crime became noticeable; to the extent that their violent actions spread across Georgia’s Black Belt, and the state
Not long after this revelation, Nick travels to New York City with Tom and Myrtle. At a vulgar, gaudy party in the apartment that Tom keeps for the affair, Myrtle begins to taunt Tom about Daisy, and Tom responds by breaking her nose. As the summer progresses, Nick eventually garners an invitation to one of Gatsby’s legendary parties. He encounters Jordan Baker at the party, and they meet Gatsby himself, a surprisingly young man who affects an English accent, has a remarkable smile, and calls everyone “old sport.” Gatsby asks to speak to Jordan alone, and, through Jordan, Nick later learns more about his mysterious neighbor. Gatsby tells Jordan that he knew Daisy in Louisville in 1917 and is deeply in love with her. He spends many nights staring at the green light at the end of her dock, across the bay from his mansion. Gatsby’s extravagant lifestyle and wild parties are simply an attempt to impress Daisy. Gatsby now wants Nick to arrange a reunion between himself and Daisy, but he is afraid that Daisy will refuse to see him if she knows that he still loves her. Nick invites Daisy to have tea at his house, without telling her that Gatsby will also be there. After an initially awkward reunion, Gatsby and Daisy reestablish their connection. Their love rekindled, they begin an affair. After a short time,
The Great Gatsby is a movie set in the 1920’s. The main character Nick Carraway lives next to the mysterious Jay Gatsby. Throughout the movie you experience the roaring 20’s first hand. They take you to the lavish countryside, through the struggling “valley of ashes”, into the bustling cites, and down into the bootlegging speakeasies. Gatsby is a secretive man and no one knows the truth about him. By the end of the film you find out his past and his secrets are revealed to us by Nick. Nick was like Gatsby’s best friend through the film. Nick was like a middle man between Gatsby and Daisy. Daisy Buchanan was a woman who lived, with her husband Tom, across the bay from Gatsby. Tom had been sleeping around behind Daisy’s back and nick was the only one who knew who it was although everyone suspected he was. Although there are many characters to follow the main one was Gatsby his life was the main purpose of the film.
