Comparing two stories by the same author is like comparing twins: they’re the same yet very different. Take “The Handsomest Drowned Man In The World,” or the story of the drowned man for short, and “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings,” or the story of the very old man for short, for example. Both were written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, which shows in the similarities, yet the differences are almost night and day. Let’s start with comparing the two. Both of the stories take place in a small coastal town. Another similarity is the abnormality of the main character. The main character in the story of the drowned man is a drowned man that is much larger and much more handsome than any person in the town. The main character in the story of the old man is an …show more content…
The first difference is in the treatment of the main character. In the story of the drowned man, the townspeople took wonderful care of the man and almost worshipped him. They treated him like an ethereal being and provided him with the best they had. However, in the story of the very old man, the townspeople treated the old man terribly. They locked him in a chicken coop and threw food at him. Later in the story, the people who captured the man started to charge money to see him, which brings on the next difference: the focus of the townspeople. In the story of the drowned man, the townspeople took the best care possible of him and gave him everything they thought he needed. Their only focus was to treat him well. In the story of the very old man, the townspeople only focused on themselves and treated the man like an outcast. They gave no sympathy to him and cared little about his needs. The last difference is in the expectations of the townspeople. In the story of the drowned man, the townspeople appreciated the man for what he was and accepted him. In the story of the very old man, the townspeople expected way more from the man than he could deliver, thus causing them to treat him
The two stories were alike in the fact that both authors lost their parents at a very young age. Since they lost their parents at a young age, they were both raised by their grandparents. Both stories also begin with a safe arrival to a new country. Both also said the journey to the new country was a two month long trip. And lastly, the the refugees and the pilgrims traveled to a completely different continents and had to adapt to new cultures. These are all the similarities between the two stories.
The similarity and connection existing between the two stories is the point of view in the two essays. The stories are both written in the first person perspective and that
There are numerous differences between the ship of death and the drapers plantation. One of the first differences and the most obvious is that the ship is on the water in the atlantic ocean and the plantation is in the Carolina colony. The second
Have you read or heard of the two short stories that are called The Tell a Tale Heart or the Short story that is called called There Will Come Soft Rains. They are both short stories written by authors with different writing styles that are quite unique. Both stories were very different written by very different authors The Tell a Tale Heart was written by the author Edgar Allan Poe. The other story’s author that wrote the story There Will Come Soft Rains was named Ray Bradbury. The Authors both use quite unique writing styles but they are very different types of writing style. They both are in different genres one is a horror story and one is a Sci-FI. Both of these stories are quite different but also the same as they are very interesting
A very important similarity between the stories, is that they both are in the view point of a Union soldier in the nineteenth century, during the civil war. The similarities between these two books combine the ideals of battle and war, also the resemblances show how alike the two protagonists of the stories are.
The old man from the story A very old man with enormous wings and Esteban from the story The Handsomest drowned man in the world are opposites of each other, maybe the only similarity that they have is that they are both flat and static characters. First, they are different in terms on how they are portrayed. The old man who is an angel, was portrayed as an ugly old man who doesn’t even resemble an angel. We can see this in paragraph 2, “He was dressed like a rag picker. There were only a few faded hairs left on his bald skull and very few teeth in his mouth…” While Esteban who is a only a dead guy was portrayed as a good looking guy.
The characters are totally different in the two versions. The short story’s main characters are a family; a husband, a wife, and two children. The film’s characters are a woman and a man, and the man’s mother and younger sister.
The settings in the two stories are similar in the way that they both take place in a small town with a sense of poverty. The adults are portrayed as authoritative and the narrators feel trapped.
The setting in the movie differs from the setting in the short story in a few ways. The setting in the movie dives into larger detail in many of the scenes such as in the beginning flood scene. The flood scene setting in the movie reveals an eerie, strong, storm with a flood that resembles a river and
These two stories were also very different, they were written in different views. The second story was written in first person, it told a story about a past experience. The first story was very general, it related to many women readers,
The narrators in the two stories both possess similar traits, but some aspects of each narrator are distinct. In “The Tell Tale Heart,” the narrator is
In another way, these two stories are different because the authors have been using different perspective when narrating the story.
In “The Black Cat”, the narrator starts the story out by saying that basically he is not insane, but he will be put to death. In the beginning paragraph of “The Tell-Tale Heart”, he then also explains that he is not crazy either. As you can see here, these introductions are very similar, due to the fact that they both state that they are not crazy, yet both narrators kill something, which is another similarity in these stories. The second paragraph of the two stories, they start to explain that they love something and are so fond of it. For instance, in “the Black Cat” that narrator states that he loves animals. In “The Tell-Tale Heart” this narrator states that he loves the old man. This right here shows that these two were had affection towards something, though they are different.
Both of these works have very similar narrators. By just reading the works, they seem very different because of who they killed and why, where and with whom they lived, and how they murdered their victims. But, by analyzing the two men, they become more and more alike. They both tell their stories in the first person and write from their jail cells. Each chose to reference an animal in their stories. The two men, both hide the corpses in the structures of the homes. Likewise, the narrators try to defend their sanity by logically justifying their horrific actions based on their mental states throughout the flashbacks of the events.
First, everything about the men's appearances was different. The first most obvious difference was that the old man was alive and the drowned man was dead. The winged man was old and ugly, while the drowned man was young and handsome. The old man had
