Comparing Truman Show And One Today

The argument of nature versus nurture is a heated one, but one side, to me, is much more intriguing than the other: nurture. The Truman Show by Peter Weir, Born A Crime by Trevor Noah, and “One Today” by Richard Blanco depict places and how they’ve impacted the person being shown. These stories and descriptions all illustrate how a place can shape an individual through geographical location, cultural challenges, and familial environment. The Truman Show and “One Today” both highlight geographical location as a piece of everybody’s life that can really shape who they are. In “One Today”, Blanco describes the United States in all of its glory, as well as tells us we need to “thank the work of our hands: / weaving steel into bridges, finishing one more report / for the boss on time, stitching another wound / or uniform, the first brush stroke on a portrait, / or the last floor on the Freedom Tower / jutting into a sky that yields to our resilience” (Blanco 49-54). Resilient. A good idea. A word that can describe anyone who lives in the United States, as that characteristic has been passed down through our ancestors to us as they had to, and we continue to put in immense effort to call this place our home—even me. I feel trapped living in Wisconsin, like it’s not where I’m meant to be. But even so, I build character by living here, just as everyone else does living anywhere in the United States, and just as Truman did living in that dome. Truman, although he didn’t know the dome was the cause, develops a seemingly endless curiosity and determination that he would’ve never got if he were living in a different place because his surroundings prompted him to
