Power is the thing that keeps the world running although it is not always used correctly. It is the same way in the novel, The Count of Monte Cristo, written by Alexandre Dumas, and the song, Viva La Vida, written by Coldplay. The Count of Monte Cristo is about a man wrongfully accused of a crime, and he is seeking out vengeance on the people who put him there using his power. He believes that he has received this power from God which makes the man feel like he is God, but he is proved wrong the hard way. Viva La Vida is similar because it is about a king who had so much power he believed himself to be in control of everything like God. However, the king was also proved wrong. In Viva La Vida and The Count of Monte Cristo, both the author and the songwriter use diction and plot to develop the idea that power does not make someone Godlike. …show more content…
“Revolutionaries wait for my head on a silver plate…” (Coldplay 28-29). The plot shows how the king’s feeling of invincibility made him feel like he had all the power in the world as God does. In reality, that is not the case. If his power made him like God, it would have protected him from the wrath of his people, but that was not the case. “... doubting for the first time… a right to do what he had done.” (Dumas 486). The plot shows how The Count begins to doubt how much power he really has. Eduard's death made him see that if he really was like God, then he should have been able to save him but he
The Count of Monte Cristo is a great book. There are a lot of movies that are based on the book. The newest movie had a good amount of similarity with a lot of difference, mean while it did better than the book. Most of the time the people who make the movie will add things to make the movie better. This would good or bad it just depends on your perspective.
In the book, The Count writes a letter to one of his truest friends saying,” tell the angel who watched over your life to pray now and then for a man who, like Satan, believed himself for an instant to be equal to God, but who realized in all humanity that supreme power and wisdom are in the hands of God alone,”(Dumas 530). In this letter that Count wrote, he is conveying the idea that he is not equal to God and was never even close to having the power he has. He uses a simile to compare himself to Satan as he took the life of an innocent child. He is conducting the idea he had no right to that power and is in great regret because of it, and he will never be as powerful as God. He also uses diction to get across the point that his power was taken too far.
David Mason’s poem, “Song of Powers” acts as an allegory using the simple game of rock, paper, scissors to convey a deeper, darker message. To convey the loneliness that comes from having too much power, the speaker uses tone shifts, personifies the objects in the game and employs metaphors.
“The way to have power is to embrace it.” - unknown The Count of Monte Cristo and the song “Viva la Vida” by coldplay both talk about power and how it can be lost. In the Count of Monte Cristo and “Viva la Vida”, the writer's use of diction portrays that power can be embraced.
King Creon demands actions to be taken; however, if they are not followed, there will be consequences. Control is illustrated since the king has the power to perform any type of action. In addition, omnipotence can be seen by people’s views
With being able to access a huge amount of power. In the song they mention,’’I see the strings that control the system.I can do anything with no assistance.’’ With this, the narrator knows things that others may not know and want to use it to their advantage. In another example.’’Driving and I won’t stop. And it feels good to be alive and on top.” The narrator likes the feeling of power and being above everyone else. They won’t stop until they get what they want, power. Not having it yet gives them the time to think about what they would do with it.Like when they say,’’I can end the planet in a holocaust’’.They create plans for what they could do with that much
Power is defined as the possession of control or command over people and events. In Shakespeare’s play ‘King Richard III’, the centrality of power is communicated through characters and their pursuit for power while in ‘Looking for Richard’, Al Pacino’s docudrama exploring Richard as a character, his struggle for power is portrayed as well as Pacino’s struggle as he produces
In the words of Plato,“The measure of a man is what he does with power”. In addition, some of our world leaders use their powers wisely, like using their power to benefit the people and not just themselves. Other leaders like Kim Jong-iI not only use their power to the fullest extent, but they also abuse their power and not for the good of the people but for their own selfish reasons. For example, Kim Jong il, the former dictator of North Korea, did not care about his people, especially the poor. He would starve them and if they were too weak to work he would torture or even kill them. The theme about power and powerlessness is shown in history and even literature. In the Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas, the author uses personification
The resistance of church represents rebelling against order and organization in a society. The wild can represent the city here, and the citizens are not attesting to the potential change that the church can have on its city. This takes power from the church to affect the city. Therefore, based on this song, without acknowledgement, power is insignificant.
the traits of a “good king”. He was a warrior with extraordinary abilities which made him seem
This song also highlights how it is lonely at the top and when you do have this much power it gets out of hand. In Viva la Vida and The Count of Monte Cristo both the author and songwriter use Imagery and diction to illustrate the idea that power in the hands of the broken can lead to corruption.
The book and movie are completely different. It 's like comparing apples and oranges. (I 'm assuming that you used the newest version with Guy Pierce). The biggest difference is probably the ommision of Haydee and Maximillien and Valentine (three of the main character) and the addition of Jacapo. Jacapo does is in the book, but he is never a large character.
“Power” is a song that was released in Kanye West’s 2010 album called “My Beautiful Dark Twister Fantasy.” This particular song is one of my favorite songs of all times because it gives me a combination of eustress and distress as well. The song is extremely upbeat, which often leads me to dance and smile while singing the lyrics. In addition, the first verse of this song empowers me because it states that the singer is living in the 21st century trying to live his life and impact society bigger than anyone. The hook of this song also plays a major role in why it’s song inspiring to me because it speaks about having power and one must take advantage of the time to reach success. The beat, the first verse, and the hook
This article focus on the definition of power what is power, examining the phenomenon of powerful and the powerless. This will help my essay in explaining that power is not owned, one can’t simply own power but it is rather given.
In the song Viva la Vida, Coldplay uses personification to personify and reveal a loss of power when the lyrics say, “...Sweep the streets I used to own…” (Coldplay). Viva la Vida demonstrates the use of personification and reveals that the speaker is lonely and powerless. This represents his kingship and his kingdom as they fell together and loss of power. This same personification is demonstrated through Scarlet Pimpernel, but in a different way, “Abusive power are shown in the Scarlet Pimpernel, and it leads to others powerlessness, “... you know as well as I do the fate that awaits him at the hands of the Revolutionary Government…” (Orczy 129). The overuse and misuse of power are demonstrated in the Scarlet Pimpernel and, conversely is conveyed by personifying fate and the French government to leave others that are in their way, powerless. Personification is expressed through Viva la Vida and The Scarlet Pimpernel in a similar but different point of view to portray it with misuse and
