When reading Winston Churchill’s “Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat” speech, you find that he uses two different types of tones. Throughout his speech, Churchill maintains a serious tone. The reason for this is because he is attempting to show the citizens of his country how important this war is, and how the only choice they have is victory. Churchill also uses powerful words such as “most” to empathize the seriousness of the event. An example of this would be, “We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind.” Determined is another one of the tones that Churchill uses when he is speaking to the citizens of Great Britain about the upcoming battle. Determination can be seen when he asks the rhetorical question, “You ask, what is our aim?
