Comparing Women In The Epic Of Gilgamesh And Genesis

The stories of The Epic of Gilgamesh and Genesis are demeaning to women. Genesis accuses women of being problematic, and made only for men. The Epic of Gilgamesh makes us perceive women as harlots. Both epics imply that women are unimportant and lesser than men. The stories of The Epic of Gilgamesh and Genesis are a slap in the face to women. In Genesis, it felt like men were more important than women. Men were created first and women weren’t mentioned much in the epic except for Eve. When Eve was mentioned in the story it seemed like she was to blame for all of the problems because she convinced Adam to eat the forbidden fruit with her. Because Eve talked Adam into eating from the tree, women are responsible for sin on earth. God makes it so that women have to carry the burden of children. Women have to go through the pain of having children all because of a piece of fruit that was out on earth to be eaten, but God said not to eat it. God was testing Adam and Eve and makes it seem as if women are naïve. At the end of Genesis all of the fathers and sons are listed. In Genesis it said, “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”(Citation) This is saying that man came from the earth, but woman came from man. It doesn’t make any sense. Men are more special to God since they were created first. Another thing I got from this reading was the stereotype that women are created for men. Women are only here on earth to serve men. Their only job is to make babies and raise them, cook, clean, and take care of their husband. The bible created this stereotype of
