In the two films of Romeo and Juliet, directors Zeffirelli and Luhrmann portray the party scene in two very different ways. The directors change the way the characters act, the costumes they wear, and the setting of the scene, to make each version of the party scene different and unique. By changing the way that their characters act, directors Zeffirelli and Luhrmann show the differences between their two films. In the Zeffirelli version of Romeo and Juliet, the characters of Romeo, Juliet, and the other party guests are very polite and proper. When Romeo first meets Juliet in the Zeffirelli adaptation of the play, they are both more innocent than the Romeo and Juliet portrayed in Luhrmann’s film. They seem slightly tentative at first, but then make their way around the room in order …show more content…
Mercutio is crazy, hyped up on drugs, as he dresses like a drag queen and becomes the life of the party. Romeo takes some drugs as well, then meets Juliet, falling madly in love with her angelic qualities. Romeo does not seem to truly love Juliet at first sight in the Luhrmann film as he does in Zeffirelli's adaptation, but he still has a great time with her at Capulet’s party. The costumes portrayed in both versions of Romeo and Juliet differ depending on how the director wanted to display the characters. In the Zeffirelli film, the characters are shown in very traditional attire, with very distinguishable red and blue outfits worn by the Capulet and Montague families. Juliet is wearing a beautiful red gown, making her stand out from the other plainly dressed guests at the masquerade, and showing that she is affiliated with the Capulet family . Romeo, a Montague, is dressed in blue with the mask of a lion, allowing him to stay hidden in the shadows of the room. In the Luhrmann adaptation, the characters are placed in a costume party, where Juliet is dressed as an angel, and Romeo as a knight in shining
However Zeffirelli included lot’s of details related to the book. For example, in 1:5 Shakespeare showed some good graphics. Without the need of illusions or making the character seem like they’re on drugs and shows he’s done a good job. This is because the party had to seem fun. Also the mood in the Zeffirelli version gave off a more romantic feeling. What this illustrates is how the Luhrmann version seemed more like a party, but not with the right feeling. For example, in the party scene, Romeo and Juliet had to meet for the very first time, and Luhrmann doesn’t really have a pleasing point of view. As a result Zeffirelli had a better eye on the tragedy.
There has been recent news about recent threats that North Korea is imposing on America. Emily Tillett, author of the article, speaks of Donald Trumps orders to prepare a fight against NK. The purpose of the article is to persuade the audience, American citizens, to trust Trumps decisions in going against NK. This is done with the use of rhetorical devices, such as appeal to ethos and simple/impacting diction.
In the different film adaptations of Romeo and Juliet, Franco Zefirelli best conveys an emotional impact through the set design, blocking, and other theatrical elements. Zefirelli also chooses to have the film in the fourteenth century so that Shakespeare’s diction is comprehensible. From this, Zeffirelli adaptation is best conveys the romantic impact Shakespeare intends to emphasize.
Luhrmann’s variation of the film is more suited to a teenage audience than Zeffirelli’s due to the vibrant settings and modern sets utilised throughout the film. Several of these sets include the beach, high rise buildings and petrol stations. These factors are used to tempt a younger audience. Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet, however takes place in a medieval Italian city. Although the original play was based and performed in this location, teenage viewers cannot relate to the surroundings, hence making it difficult to understand or appreciate the plot.
Zefferelli vs. Baz Luhrmann - Shirin Shahsavari - 3/10/16 Although Zefferelli’s film is a better book-to-movie adaptation of Shakespeare's famous play, “Romeo and Juliet”, Baz Luhrmann’s version is a lot more entertaining and comprehensible to most teenagers because of its modern setting. Perhaps, one of the most substantial visible contrasts between the two films is the setting. Zeffirelli’s film takes place in a classical setting, accurately representing the actual historic period in which the play was written in. However, in Luhrmann’s version the setting has been completely transformed to make the film more modern and therefore easier for the audience to understand and relate to. The modern setting makes the film more intriguing and apprehensible
Even though Mercutio doesn't know about Romeo and Juliet's relationship he talks very seriously about Romeo and love "Alas, poor Romeo! He is already dead, stabbed with a white wench’s black eye, shot through the ear with a love song, the very pin of his heart cleft with the blind bow-boy’s butt shaft. And is he a man to encounter Tybalt?"(2.4.14). He talks about Romeo and love more seriously than in act one. Mercutio becomes very serious in this act as he gets closer to his own demise to Tybalt. He also begins to realize that Romeo won't be enough of a man to fight Tybalt later on. This is the biggest turning point in this character's attitude and mood for the rest of the play. He becomes slightly angrier as well. At the same time Romeo is now fooling around with Juliet
Mercutio is a member of the royal family, he neither a Montague or a Capulet, but because Romeo is his friend he stands on the Montagues side. Mercutio always says puns which makes the play more entertaining and interesting, for example when Romeo was in love with Rosaline, Mercutio says that love is too rough “If love be rough with you, be rough with love” through these word shows that Mercutio is straightforward. Mercutio urges Romeo to come to the ball "Nay, gentle Romeo, we must have you dance...You are a lover; borrow Cupid's wings, and soar with them above a common bound" (Act 1, Scene 4, Line 13-18), that's when Romeo and Juliet meet. Nonetheless Mercutio had such a broad personality that when he died, rest of the play didn’t have as much comedy and turned more to the dark
If it wasn’t for Mercutio telling Romeo to go to the party that night Romeo never would’ve met the love of his life. He is not Capulet or Montague. He is in relation to the Prince of Varona. Mercutio has a wild side too though. At the party he was going around being goofy with people. He was also dressed up as a girl for the party.
The production design in Romeo + Juliet triumphs the more traditional approach made by Zeffirelli in Romeo and Juliet. Luhrmann’s presentation of his film is aesthetically appealing and engages the audience. Luhrmann also uses his environment to suit the emotions of various characters. He suggests that something bad will happen when the clouds turn grey and it begins to rain during the fight scene between Mercutio, Romeo and Tybalt. Furthermore, he continues to play with the weather in correlation to the characters’ emotions, as a thunderstorm ensues during Romeo and Tybalt’s showdown. This is effective in altering the motif of the scene, as it suddenly creates a gloomy atmosphere, in contrast to the constant weather in Zeffirelli’s version. Zeffirelli’s version is bland and it fails to entice the audience in anyway. The beach setting is modern and there are more colours which is visually dynamic. The final scene where Romeo and Juliet meet is very different in both versions. Luhrmann’s one is vibrant, creating a realistic image with the many candles surrounding Juliet’s death bed in the church. However, Zeffirelli’s scene once again fails
Many historians believe that due to the Wilhelmine Era and the expansion of the German nation, as a whole, led to the outbreak of World War One. During the Bismarck era, Bismarck 's main goal was to keep France isolated and stay in good relations with Austria and Russia so that it would prevent a two-front war. Although Bismarck 's foreign policy was creating cooperation, it did not last very long. The spark of World War one came from the Wilhelmine era, which turned away from everything Bismarck’s foreign policy represented. The expansion of the military scared Europe, the industrialization of the railroad was a suspicion to other countries, and
In Romeo and Juliet, Baz Luhrmann (1996) and Franco Zeffirelli (1968) have communicated universal ideas through setting and music in two different ways in their movies. In this essay, I am going to discuss act 1 scene 5 (the party scene), where Romeo and Juliet first meet. This scene shows a balance between the universal ideas love and conflict, where the two families are at war, but there is also deep and a romantic love between the two lovers. They are in love with each other but can’t be together because they are in different families. Conflict and love occurs throughout Luhrmann and Zeffirelli movies and causes hell for the Capulets and Montagues.
Since Juliet is a Capulet, her costume shows her status in the community as well-respected and wealthy, but in a modest manner as represented with the modern theme. Her costume expresses her beauty in a romantic and girly way, in a simplistic manner, appropriate for modern time. She is very modest and not like any Capulet. She is very open-hearted even towards her opposing house, the Montagues. Therefore, Juliet’s costume appropriately reveals the setting we chose, modern time, by wearing casual sneakers, black jeans, a red v-necked sweater to represent her belonging to the Capulets, and a rose to match her costume to overall represent her sweet, innocent, young, and romantic personality. Additionally, since the servant works for the higher power/class family, the Capulets, her costume must show the status in the
Romeo and Juliet is a play written by William Shakespeare who talks about two young lovers in the town of Verona, whose love ultimately end to their tragic deaths. In Romeo and Juliet, Mercutio is presented as a minor character, overshadowed by more prevalent characters, such as his friend Romeo. He is first introduced to the play, when heartbroken Romeo seeks help and advice from Mercutio, who then suggests that they both go to a ball hosted by the Capulets. Mercutio is neither Montague nor Capulet, and although he does not seem to have as large of a role compared to other characters, however Mercutio is able to bring dramatic value to the play of Romeo and Juliet, and it is thanks to Mercutio that the story is able to progress and explore the themes and characters in the play.
The scene that was most different between the play and the movie of Romeo and Juliet was how the two crossed lovers first met each other. In the play Romeo and the Montague boys find out about the Capulet party through a poor peasant who could not read the invitations. While in the movie the Capulet party is announced through a newscast over T.V. I think the director changed this so the invite can go more along with the time period of the movie. This could change how the viewers see it by making the invite less secret. Over a newscast anyone who was paying attention to the T.V. could of heard the invite. Another main difference in this scene would be Romeo and Juliet first seeing each other in the bathroom across a fish tank rather than across the ballroom in the play. This could take away from the romantic side of the two first seeing each other. In the play it seems Romeo and Juliet have more privacy when they first speak to each other. In the movie the two are getting on and off an elevator just not to be seen. This could add more suspense to the scene and make the viewers see the movie from a lofty viewpoint.
