Comparing Zimbabwe And George Orwell's Animal Farm

The reign of Mugabe in Zimbabwe and George Orwell’s novel Animal Farm show observations of abused power are still relevant today. To begin, in both scenarios of Animal Farm Zimbabwe, there is a cult of the individual and/ or strong leader. In the documentary “Frontline/ World: Zimbabwe”, President Mugabe, “... launched a campaign claiming ‘he would beautify the poor urban areas’... real aim was to wipe out a breeding ground for opposition…” (). Just like in Animal Farm, Mugabe and Napoleon both portray themselves as heros or gods. In chapter 5 of Animal Farm Napoleon has Squealer say Napoleon is making a bog sacrifice in taking the leadership position of the farm. On “Zimbabwe: Shadows and Lies”, the background information says, “1987- Robert Mugabe became the nation's first… president who dominated the country's political system… 2002- Mugabe rigged presidential election to ensure re-election …”. In Animal Farm, Napoleon did a similar action by chasing away Snowball so that he could gain complete control of the farm. The situation in Zimbabwe and Animal Farm, with a one person leadership, both lead to destruction because maybe each leader overlooked what really had to be fixed or done in order for their country to succeed. Lastly, each event has the dictatorship and government that organizes violence/ police terror. In the video, Mugabe accused two opposers of the murder of a political party member even though they never committed the crime. One of the victims said, “I was taken before cameras to make indications on a grave where there was a man buried… that I never killed… I was made to proclaim before the nation I was the murderer of that person… I was one time raped by prisoners while prison officers watched…”.
