In the early nineteenth century, modern science developed rapidly. While Mary had the idea about Frankenstein, she was listening her husband’s friends to talk about the latest progress in “medical science”, including the researches about chemistry and electricity (Holmes 490).
In the beginning of Chapter Two, the characteristics of young Victor and Elizabeth are compared, one is attracted by new things, the other is immersed into elegant poets, which expresses that Victor is a person who is keen on seeking for the secret of human and implies his action of creating a “person” afterwards.
She busied herself with following the aerial creations of poets; and in the majestic and wondrous scenes which surrounded our Swiss home... While my companion contemplated with a serious and satisfied spirit the magnificent appearances of things, I delighted in investigating their causes. The world was to me a secret which I desired to divine. Curiosity, earnest research to learn the hidden laws of nature, gladness akin to rapture, as they were unfolded to me, are among the earliest sensations I can remember (Shelley 22).
The comparison between Victor and Elizabeth represents two ways of looking at world. Elizabeth focuses on reading and creating poets, whereas Victor prefers to know the world through scientific ways, called “bioengineering,

He describes the writers who study natural philosophy, actually alchemy, have “the wild fancies” and himself as a person who has been “imbued with a fervent longing to penetrate the secrets of nature”(25). Those writers are just like a guiding light for Victor, guiding him to a new world, sparking his curiosity and thirst of knowledge. And, he thinks that “natural philosophy is the genius that has regulated my fate”, indicating natural philosophy plays an important role for Victor
