“Cinderella” Comparison Essay
Cinderella is a classic story that has been told for hundreds of years. Two of the most common adaptations of the Cinderella story is the French and German versions. Even though in the French and German versions both have similar family dynamics and receive similar “rewards”, they have different “fairy Godmothers” and they experience different supernatural events. In both the French and the German versions of the Cinderella story, the Cinderella characters have similar family dynamics. More specifically, Cinderella’s mother is absent in both stories. “Now that no one else was at home, Cinderella went to her mother's grave beneath the hazel tree, and cried out: Shake and quiver, little tree, Throw gold and silver down to me. Then the bird threw a gold and silver dress down to her, and slippers embroidered with silk and silver. She quickly put on the dress and went to the festival.” (Grimm’s 1) The bird threw Cinderella gold and other beautiful things so she could go to the ball. In the French version, Cinderella also received beautiful clothes and gifts from her fairy godmother. “Her godmother then touched her with her wand, and, at the same instant, her clothes turned into cloth of gold and silver, all beset with jewels. This done, she gave her a pair of glass slippers, the prettiest in the whole world.” (Perrault 2) In this version of the story, Cinderella's fairy Godmother gave her gifts for supposedly being a “good girl”. Even though both Cinderella character receive similar gifts, they are given by completely different people or animals. Next, in the French version of Cinderella, A fairy Godmother grants Cinderella many things. “. Her godmother scooped out all the inside of it, leaving nothing but the rind. Having done this, she struck the pumpkin with her wand, and it was instantly turned into a fine coach, gilded all over with gold.” (Perrault 1) With this being stated, the reader(s) can infer that the fairy Godmother is magical and that she can gift Cinderella with
