Of Mice and Men is a story about two unlikely best friends Lenny and George and them trying to find their way in the world. The story takes place when the two buddies are walking to their next job because they ran into a “situation”. Lenny is a tall lanky guy who is a child stuck in a man's body with godly strength. George is the total opposite of his companion. He is short grumpy and the brains of the operation. Near the beginning of the story George tells Lenny if anything should go wrong at their new job to meet at their resting place by their job. Curley's wife comes in and tries to comfort him. Once they start to talk she tells him how she hates being married to Curley and how she could have been a movie star. Lenny tells her how it was an accident and he didn't mean to hurt the puppy. She lets him touch her hair but once he becomes rough she yells and he covers her mouth. Lenny ends up breaking her neck and panics and then he remembers to go the safe place George told him to go to. Once George comes in the barn and discovers Curley's wife dead body he immediately knows what happened. He and the guys walk off to go and find Lenny. Once George finds him he stands behind him and gets him to calm down. Lenny asks George to tell him what their life will be once they move together and how he will get to tend to the rabbits. Lenny ask George if he’s mad at him for doing a bad thing and George said no, then all of a sudden while he is describing how he will tend to the rabbits George takes out the gun and shoots Lenny in the back of the head. Once the other guys arrive George tells him that he had to take the gun away from him and he had no choice but to defend himself. Two hours after George killed Lennie, George was at the bar with Curley and Slim to get a drink, and the three began talking about Lennie, making George start to think if he had done the right thing by shooting Lennie in the head. After the three left the bar, George walked out onto the street and saw Curley's wife walking down the street. George decided to shrug it off and told himself that it was all part of his imagination, and George returned to his house. Three years later, George had built the house by the lake that Lennie had wanted, and George had buried Lennie's body in the backyard. Later, George had decided to go to the bar to get a drink, when he got to the bar he saw Slim and Carley, and Curley's wife all talking with each other. When the group saw George, he was in awe "I thought that Lennie killed you..." he said to Curley's wife, Curley replied excitedly "Nope, i'm not sure how but she is alive!" George was still confused, then Slim said "Stop asking so many questions and come have a drink" George had then began thinking about how the only reason he killed Lennie was because Lennie went too far to save by killing Curley's wife. After that, George had began disconnecting himself with the rest of the group because he had become depressed after he had learned that Lennie wasn't a murderer. Just as George was thinking about how he shouldn't have killed Lennie, he heard a knock on his door, and he went to see who it was, Curley's wife was at the door with Slim, and both were looking sad. George had opened the door for them, and said "What happened?" Curley's wife looked back at him, and informed him that Curley had been murdered. George beckoned the two inside is house, and said "Come in, do either of you want anything to drink?" Curley's wife shook her head Slim walked her inside. The three sat down at a table in George's house "Tell me what happened" George said nervously, Curley's wife replied, "I was having an argument with Curley and he had gotten angry and stormed off, later, when i went looking for him, I found him in the ranch, with an axe wound in his head." After searching numerous places, Lennie and George found a place to work in a ranch in Salinas Valley. There, Lennie made friends with Slim, Candy, and Crooks. However, one day, Lennie squeezed a puppy too tightly and ended up killing it. Worried that George would find out and not let him “Tend the rabbits”, Lennie buried the puppy inside a barn. Right at the moment, Curley’s Wife walked in and demanded Lennie to tell her what he was hiding.

In the book Of mice and men and the poem “To a mouse” both demonstrate how not only people are powerless and powerful but how emotions can be too. Of Mice and Men is a written by John Steinbeck. George Milton and Lennie Smalls are the two main characters in this story. In this story George has to make very tough decisions that can either help or ruin his future. For example, when George shot and killed Lennie, he did it to save Lennie from pain. If George didn't make that decision to shoot Lennie, Curley would’ve got to him and made him suffer. George killing Lennie was justified, he had to do it.
Picking up the book “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck holds a different feel then putting it down. Leaving the reader pondering the true theme of the story. A tale among two friends is the mindset most would assume before reading the book but digging deeper you start to realize the dark truth. The story starts with both Lenny who’s large and unaware of his own true strength and George who’s skinny and quick witted. The tale takes both characters and presents them with challenges. Lennie has a mild mental disability which often leads both of them into a lot of trouble. While George must take care of Lennie and always get him out of trouble. Two characters who travel together would be envisioned to be best pals but what awaits them is a rude awakening, George says “Lennie just come along with me out workin '. Got kinda used to each other after a little while” (Steinbeck 3.12).
