Of Mice and Men was a striking book about a few men simply endeavoring to get by in the Great Depression. George and Lennie had known each other for quite a while and had developed to rely upon each other. All through the book Lennie got some information about them, about how they would get a place and live respectively, they never got the chance to do that, as life would have it, reality acted as a burden. The most questionable point from this book was the reason George killed Lennie. It was the best choice for numerous reasons, the first being that Lennie was a threat to people around him and additionally himself, the second is that Lennie couldn't make do without George and the last being that if George didn't, Curly would have. It's obvious
Americans often try to seek happiness through their success. In Steinbeck’s book Of Mice and Men, and Fitzgerald’s book The Great Gatsby both stories express the characters admiration of achieving the American dream. Both stories explain with example how setting, relationships, and Cause and effect all play a role in the destiny of each character’s American dream.
Barack Obama and George Miller from Of Mice and Men exemplify the aspect of Hope and plans for the future within the american dream.
“Warren Lee Hill, a man with an IQ of 70, Was put to death Tuesday despite international protests that Georgia was executing a man with a child’s intellect.” Both Warren Hill and Lennie Small from John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, suffered the same fate of death. Both men suffering from Mental Retardation. George Milton murdering Lennie and, Georgia wrongfully “executing” Warren. Some people believe George was justified because he killed Lennie out of love, and it was the right thing to do for that certain moment in time. However, the opposite is true because George was not justified and should be punished for killing Lennie because he didn’t let the police handle the issue, Lennie is like a child in his own way and shouldn’t face death, And they could have just locked him in jail or prison instead of taking a life.
In 1920 women got the right to vote. In 1948 President Truman signed the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act. Jeannette Rankin was the first woman to be elected to congress. Women’s rights have come a long way, nowadays women are CEO’sCeo’s of companies and doing great things. Although it wasn’t always like this, in Of Mice and Men, and in Sojourner Truth’s Ain’t I a Woman speech women weren’t treated right. Men thought that women weren’t as strong as them, and couldn’t do a man’s job.
The common emotion these two dogs caused the narrator was embarrassment. In paragraph one, it talks about a Scotch terrier that had puppies out in the public. This states, “...my moment of keenest embarrassment was the time a Scotch terrier named Jeannie, who had just had six puppies...had the unexpected seventh and last at the corner of Eleventh Street and Fifth Avenue…” This would be quite embarrassing just due to the fact that it took place on a street corner. While the narrator’s dog was having its seventh and final puppy, there were people walking, biking, and driving cars. Lots of people would have seen this which would be a huge embarrassment to practically anybody. Also, in paragraph two it clearly states that the other dog, a large
John Steinbeck’s books The Pearl and Of Mice and Men have some similarities as well as differences. There is more correspondence between these two books if you sit down and think about it. They are not completely the same, they have their own twist to it. These books show the violence in ways we do not have to resort to.
Although the film does offer extraordinary imagery and characterization, some still argue that the book is a better representation of the story through its use of mood. Supporters state that Steinbeck’s masterful establishing of mood through his artful diction shows the novel to be superior to the film. They point to the many clever wording and phrasing choices throughout the story, that vividly build the lonely and oppressive atmosphere. These uses of diction, though subtle, manages to powerfully tug at the reader’s heartstrings, immersing them within the story’s somber mood. An example of such great technique can be found in his simple description of Candy while he is in Crooks’ room,“Candy leaned against the wall beside the broken collar
Although it would seem George betrayed Lennie’s trust, George was justified in his decision to shoot Lennie because of Lennie’s actions and safety.
“Am I my brother’s keeper? Yes, I am.” Scott, Jill “Brotha”. Since biblical times it has been debated over whether or not “I am my brother’s keeper”. In Mice of Men by John Steinbeck, he takes a deeper look at the meaning of my brother’s keeper. Of Mice and Men is based in California during the 1930’s. It is a tale of two friends who travel across California looking for work, and a place to call their own. While the story is mostly about George Milton, who looks after his travelling companion Lennie Smalls, who has a mental disability; the story is also about how Lennie takes care of George. For instance, they often sit and talk about how they have each other to take care of, and when Crooks makes it seem like Lennie is not coming back, Lennie almost assaults Crooks to protect George. Lennie, more than once in the story offers to leave George, if he feels that would be best, sacrificing his
The Of Mice and Men Movie (made in 1992) is based off the book written by John Steinbeck. The movie portrays all the same meanings and feelings as the book. It’s directed by Gary Sinise; he is also plays the main character named George. I found this pretty cool; Gary did a good job of making a dynamic movie that grabs people’s attention. The movie was fun because you got to watch the movie unravel and come to life. A quick pointer is to read the book it really gave you a better understanding of what was happening in the movie.
A Teachable Good Book: Of Mice and Men is a positive criticism for the book Of Mice and Men. Thomas Scarseth makes brilliant points on what makes Of Mice and Men a classic. Scarseth notes the realism in the book, and the loving friendship between George Milton and Lennie Small. Scarseth states that Of Mice and Men uses vulgar language, sexual themes, racism, and low-class characters to challenge social constructs of the time period.

Of Mice and Men is a famous novel by John Steinbeck. He gets his title from another famous poem named To A Mouse by Robert Burns. The poem is about a mouse that has built a nest. The narrator accidentally plows through his nest which, to the mouse, is like a home. In the beginning the narrator is telling the mouse that he shouldn’t run away like that because he would feel like he has to go after him. After that, he tells him that he is sorry that other people have given the mouse a reason to be scared of him. An example of why he should be scared would be the mouse traps we set up to kill them. The mouse has a reason to be scared and the narrator is starting to understand that. In the poem it says, “It’s feeble walls the winds are scattering! And nothing now, to build a
Everyone has their own perceptions on everything, from books to the movies they are based off of. Depending on their background, they could see a book through a psychological perspective, feminist or even Marxist. The way something is seen depends on who that person is and the way they think. The Great Depression changed people’s life many for the worst some used it for the better. John Steinbeck used it for the inspiration when writing many of his books. When John Steinbeck wrote “Of Mice and Men” he wrote it through a historical perspective. Using real life events during The Great Depression John Steinbeck is able to make his story “Of Mice and Men” both relatable and historically accurate by using his own life events, making George and Lennie walking to their job, the long travels that people endured, the horrible living/working conditions, the other books that also used historical realism, and the racism and discrimination of the time. “During this time he was becoming increasingly concerned about current social and economic problems and he published three successive novels about farm workers, each distinctive in tone and conception” ” (Loftis) Steinbeck used similar scenarios throughout “Of Mice and Men” that many
When I first read this chapter I thought the shooting of Candy’s dog represented Candy and his old age. The inability to function reflects Candy’s age and how he struggles physically in his job. The shooting shows how eventually he will be unable to work and will have nowhere else to go. However, once I finished the book I see the shooting of Candy’s dog as a way to show Lennie’s own struggles in such a situation.
