In both Sherlock Junior and The Gold Rush, the main characters played by Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin both have some difficulties integrating in the mainstream societies. However, Keaton’s character brings the audience more laughter because all the troubles he has been through are in his fantasy. On the other hand, Charlie the tramp who played by Chaplin can cause the audience to feel both happiness and fear at the same time because Charlie experiences those difficulties is in his real life. In Sherlock Junior, the film-within-film plots make the audience aware that the dangers Keaton face will not bring him actual damages because they are just in his fantasies. After Keaton is setting up to steal the watch and failing from his detective
Charlie Chaplin, or the “Little Tramp”, led a life many referred to as a Cinderella story. Chaplin was the son of a poor London family, who were entertainers. As a child, at an early age, he also performed, and made his stage debut in 1894. He began his career when he played a paperboy in the film Sherlock Holmes. He also worked as a mime in Vaudeville theatres in London, until he left for America. When Chaplin arrived in the States, he joined the Karno Pantomime Troupe, and toured with them for six years. This experience led him to branch out on his own, making his own films. One of these films was City Lights. Many say that this film and others, lead him to be one the most successful film stars of his time. “Chaplin dedicated himself to perfecting every scene during both the writing process and on set, sacrificing his personal life during production” (Eggert, 2006).
We are fortunate enough to see and discover what the gold rush was like as a result of Samuel Thomas Gills lifelike drawings. He showed us how the human race acted, and what life was like in Ballarat during the 1850s. Without his images, we wouldn’t have much footage on the stockade and events leading to it and from it.
story of why a United States Mint facility was needed in Denver goes back to about 1850, when some miners found gold in Colorado, then part of Kansas Territory. The Gold Rush didn't begin then because the miners who found the gold didn't even stop to claim it! They were only passing through on their way to search for gold in California. But the news spread quickly each time gold was found in this area around Pike's Peak.
Over the past two centuries, America has been plagued by a sharply contrasting vision of what is and what should be. Since the Civil War, and even decades before the conflict began, authors and filmmakers have attempted to highlight problems that exist in society and cast them under a critical spotlight. They criticize and mock society’s faults and urge their respective audiences to enact positive change. Although one may see Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn and Charlie Chaplin’s The Gold Rush as two completely separate and different works of high comedy, their similarities are much more visible upon analysis. Using satire as a critical tool, Twain and Chaplin call for social change that fits in line with the ideals of America, such as justice, equality and respect. By using satire in Huckleberry Finn and The Gold Rush, Twain and Chaplin argue that real American life is so far from being idealistic that the gap between the real and the ideal is shocking, unnerving and a cause for immediate reflection on behalf of audiences.
In early 1848, cries of gold findings flooded the West. White settlers flooded the area like a hurricane in search of riches never seen before to the common man. It was the single greatest migration of people in a shortest amount of time. The gold rush was a very dark period in American history and it shouldn’t be celebrated; the Native American’s were slaughtered in American thirst for gold Explosions of violence from both natives and settlers were common in this environment of prejudice and greed. Between 1850 and 1890 eighty percent of the total number of Native Americans in California died due to murder and massacre, disease, starvation, and forced migration from their native lands. The destruction of the culture and lives of the people native to California and the Black Hills of South Dakota. Greed changed the morals and values of the miners and Americans alike in the Gold Rush. The gold rush brought riches and highlighted racism of white Americans, while systematically destroying Native Americans in that region.
California was a land where the American dream came true for many. Before the gold rush, California was under the Mexican rule since 1821. At that time, California’s population mainly consisted of about 6,500 Californios, 700 Americans and 150,000 Native Americans. Most of the Californios lived on vast ranches given to them as land grants by the Mexican government. New settlers, mainly Americans, started moving into California for land and trade. Mexican control over California weakened following the Bear Flag revolt by the settlers and the United States took control of the region. The United States waged war against Mexico for manifest destiny and a dispute over Texas in the Mexican –American War on May 19,1846. The war lasted for
I have watched all of THE PAWNSHOP, THE KID, and COPS. Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton have done hundreds of silent films, each specializing in their own kind of comedy. Both actors were profound comedians, Chaplin, sophisticated and dignified, and Keaton, sturdy and compact. They each had an appealing style of film and comedy, but I don’t have a preference between Keaton and Chaplin as both a filmmakers and comedians.
“Slavery, Gold Rush, what's next?!” Mom, dad, and I have never known what freedom is. We have been sent from slavery to the Gold Rush, my family has never been treated well. When we were slaves we worked for nine whole years, then we got sent to were the miners worked... It’s November 27, 1861, and the cold weather has already been really bad for everyone, especially miners.
The Gold Rush created many opportunities for up and coming entrepreneurs such as Levi Strauss, Henry Wells and William Fargo, as well as John Studebaker. Levi Strauss invented the blue jeans for the miners and the working class, which became loved by all. Levi Strauss went to San Francisco in 1853 to take advantage of the giant sales opportunity in California (PBS.com). Once in San Francisco, Levi opened up a store and began to sell merchandise. John Davis, a Nevada tailor, approached Levi Strauss and wanted to create a partnership for his heavy duty cotton work pants (PBS.com). The jeans became a huge success with miners, cowboys, and the working class. “By the end of 1873, thousands of San Franciscans were wearing Strauss and Davis's pants”
There are numerous alternative investment options out there, and the one that I am interested in the most is gold. Why gold? Well, before I came to America to study, my first impression on the U.S. is the historical event Gold Rush that happened in 19th century. The discovery of gold nuggets in the Sacramento Valley in early 1848 sparked the Gold Rush, arguably one of the most significant events to shape American history during the first half of the 19th century. As news spread of the discovery, thousands of prospective gold miners traveled by sea or over land to San Francisco and the surrounding area; by the end of 1849, the non-native population of the California territory was some 100,000. A total of $2 billion worth of precious metal was extracted from the area during the Gold Rush, which peaked in 1852. This is the “American Dream”, and everyone who came to the U.S. has an American Dream. Therefore, in this final project, I decide to talk about this alternative investment option: gold.
Douglas stood still as a stone in the camouflage of the wilderness of the passage. His longbow drawn back with a fine wood arrow complete with a sharp metallic head and duck feathers holstered on the string. He stared over to his colleague and best friend from his childhood years, Quinn. Quinn’s blue and white face paint reflecting his usual careless and sloppy attitude. Even when they were going to swarm over an English supply cart, their biggest mission with orders straight from Wallace himself, Quinn doesn’t even have a ready bow.
Although, Huck and Jim are fleeing for different reasons their main goal is freedom. Another piece of work that deals with social satire and looks at the American ideals versus the American realities is the silent film The Gold
Gold Rush is one of the significant event in the history. In this project, I will introduce what is the major effects of the Gold Rush in the California and how it changed the people, economic, political and environmental effects. The Gold Rush was a rapid movement of people to a newly discovered Goldfield. The Gold Rush was arguably one of the most significant events to build American history during the first half of the 19th century. Thousands of gold miners traveled by the sea and over the land to San Francisco and the surrounding area. In January 1848, James Wilson Marshall discovered gold along the American
Detective fiction is a relatively young genre of literature: “The idea that crime … provided entertainment was only born in the first decades of the nineteenth century, but it would bloom into one of the greatest mass-media interests of all time” (Worsley 17, italics in the original). In spite of its youthfulness, this genre has already developed its own rules and regulations/conventions, as well as established its own canon.
Charlie Chaplin has directed over thirty films. He is known for humanizing characters, making them more realistic. In the year of 1925, he directed and starred in arguably his most famous film, The Gold Rush. Humanization plays a huge roll in this movie. Most movies all seem to have characters that we like to call stereotypes.
