The war determined whether the United States of America would be a nation with equal rights for everyone or a country that still accepted slavery and allowed people to be treated like they are property instead of people. The topic of slavery brought a lot tension economically and created social barriers for communicating with other individuals and groups between the North and the South. The North was industrialized and had a firm economy while the South relied heavily on slaves for their economy. The Civil War was a very significant time in American history. The Civil War was fought between the Confederate States of America and the United States of America. Most people say the Civil War was a war that was fought to end slavery, which it was for most of the population. The Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865 to determine the survival of the Union. The South wanted slaves to help run there farming plantations. Southern slave owners did not want their way of life threatened or changed, life had been the same for them for generations. Those Americans from the North were considered more progressive and had more influence from other cultures which helped open their eyes to the horrors of slavery. But for many of the men, going to war was a chance to escape boredom and some came because it was the right thing to do (p. 28).

The Civil War was a decisive moment in US history, one which would change the course of the nation – for better or for worse – for ages to come. The war began due to growing tensions between the northern and southern states over social and economic issues, all centered on the issue of slavery. Many of those who called for the abolition of slavery claimed that it was immoral; proponents hinged that the southern economy was reliant on slaves, and that it was an institution which was justified by scripture. The Civil War highlighted the differences between the Union and the Confederacy.

Douglass thought he would be a slave for life, he said, “You will be free as soon as you are twenty-one, but I am a slave for life.” -Frederick Douglass. The American Civil War, the bloodiest war in all of American history, was a conflict over the bitter issue of slavery. Although the moral controversy of slavery had been debated for some time, the underlying concern in the mid-1800s was the disagreement over different interpretations of the separation of powers in the Constitution. The South argued that the states were meant to have a considerable amount of self-sovereignty, therefore having the right in determining themselves if slavery was to be allowed. On the contrary, the North thought that the founding fathers aimed for a strong, collective union. The vagueness of slavery in the Constitution left much to be desired, as it addressed almost nothing about it. By the 1850s, slavery was rooted so much in the southern economy that it was feared plantations and the cotton industry would collapse if slaves were freed. The southern states seceding from the Union, and soon thereafter the Civil War, was a result of ¬the structural failures of the Constitution and a conflict over economical and territorial resources.

Through the years of 1861 to 1865 the United States had fought the Civil war. During these years slavery was a big topic. In the south, the confederate states wanted to expand slavery all through the north and continue to not give them their rights. While in the north, the union wanted to help slaves in any way possible. During the civil war both sides needed more men power to win this war.

The Civil War has changed and redefined the United States in many ways, in fact it is the reason that the United States is now a “free country”. All slaves were freed, and during this time, freedom of speech was granted to all citizens of America. This is a big deal because people using other people as slaves is inhumane and wrong. America was redefined in many ways after the civil war, but the end to slavery and freedom of speech made the biggest impact in my opinion. The end to slavery freed hundreds and hundreds of people, and allowed them to live their life the way that they wanted to. All the outcomes seemed to have a really positive effect on people, leaving everyone’s life a little easier.

Slavery caused many violent events in the 17 and 1800’s. The South and the North could not agree with slavery; the North was anti-slavery and the South were pro-slavery. The south considered slaves to be their own personal property and the slaves were not allowed to be counted as a citizen of the United States; they were only considered to be counted as 3/5 of a person. Because slave owners were so harsh to their slaves, the slaves generated many slave rebellions and also conducted the Under Ground Railroad which took them to the north to be free if they could make it through it. The North and South also tried to solve the disagreement of slavery in the new Missouri by creating the Missouri Compromise, which stated that North of the 36-degree latitude line would be free of slavery, and South of the 30-degree latitude line would be slave areas. When more states started to come along, the disagreement worsened. During the popular sovereignty voting for each state for free or slave, southerners crossed the border to alter the votes and argued that slaves are their personal property and if they choose to move to one of the new states that is a free state, they should be able to bring their slaves with them. Throughout the years slavery continued to be a major argument, so Abraham Lincoln decided he needed to do something about it without breaking up the union; and that meant issuing an Emancipation Proclamation for Confederate States.

The Address is a documentary about a boys school. At this school the boys are given the task to memorise the Gettysburg Address. When: The Address starts out the week after the boys all get back from their Thanksgiving break. The boys are challenged to memorize the speech by February the 15th.

The Civil war was one of three major events that shaped American History because, before the civil war. The north and south stated divided and everyone picked a side, Different cultures and political principles developed. All of this steered to differences on issues such as taxes, tariffs and inner improvements as well as states’ rights against federal rights. He wanted to keep the border slave states of Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri in the Union and build the broadest possible base of support for the war in the North.

The tone and stage are set with the background of the great battle field of Gettysburg’s. Our nation is involved in a great civil war between its brothers with two different views and divisions. President Lincoln has the daunting task as the President of the United States to bring healing to this torn country; to remind the country that it was only 87 years earlier that this young country started on its great experiment. The thesis statement answers the question and reminds the audience that all men are created equal and that the basis on which our country was founded on was liberty and equality.
