The French Revolution was a period of social and political upheaval between the years of 1789 and 1799. The revolution contributed to the decline of the monarchy as well as the power of the church. The bourgeoisie rose up against the unpopular luxuries the aristocracy and clergymen enjoyed. After both the French and Indian war and the American Revolution many lower class Frenchman were struggling economically and resented the aristocracy and the upper-class for their continued life of luxury despite the problems much of the nation was facing. In both the French and American revolutions the ideals were brought about by the first Enlightenment and the general feeling of inequality felt by the non-aristocracy. Dominique (later Haiti) during the period of 1791 and 1804 which ended in the elimination of slavery and the foundation of the Republic of Haiti. After Haitian independence was won in 1804, Haiti still relied heavily on the government structure under the French colonial rule and the educated children of Frenchmen and Haitians held most of the important government positions. Haiti established a two caste society, with the upper class dominated by the children of white plantation owners. In addition, the new nation was forced to pay 150 million francs to the French government to cover the losses of the ex-slave owners in order for France to recognize Haiti as an independent state. This also brought Haiti out of an economic and political standstill due to the fact that the French still treated Haiti as their colony and did not allow them to become officially sovereign until 1838. Due to this political and economic standstill the newly sovereign nation spent over 100 years repaying their debts and establishing a stable and reliable democratic government. The Haitian rebellion, like the American Revolution was brought about by Enlightenment thought but also by the anger over the lack of rights for slaves in France’s Declaration of Human Rights even though groups such as women received the right to vote and hold property. Also similar to the American Revolution, the Haitian revolution was carried out mostly by the lower class who were angered that they did not receive the rights that other’s received under France’s Declaration of Human Rights.
