Comparisons of Discrete-Trial and Normalized Behavioral Language Intervention for Young Children with Autism

Psychology is the study of how individuals act with one another, the relationships between their social group, and the correlation within their environment. Psychology plays a major role in everyday life, especially in the nursing division. As a nurse, I will need the basic skills of psychology. For example, a part of the course was learning about the psychological diseases in which I could be working in a psychiatric ward. Another was learning about behavior therapies like operant conditioning. I could be a pediatric nurse and one of my patients could be like my brother. The experiment consisted of the child giving some type of signal that they were ready to take part in some activity or object. Then, there is an ordinary classroom provided for the child and teacher to converse. After, if the child tries speaking and asks for what he/she wants then the teacher gives them what they wanted. This is what operant conditioning is, the child did what the experimenters wanted them to do and in return the child attained a reward. In conclusion, the normalized treatment worked effectively compared to the discrete treatment. The research has shown that by giving the child a normal condition and a system of rewards and punishment they will be successful. Becoming a nurse, I will need this information to carry on in my career especially if I plan on going into pediatrics. Likewise, I could use it in other departments of the nursing division. For example, I could use it in pediatric oncology or even in an elementary school being the school nurse. Operant conditioning is a subclass of behavior therapy. I can now use behavior therapy which I learned that it works better on children than adults. If I didn’t know anything about psychology I feel that I wouldn’t be as great of a nurse as I should be. Going back through all the different fields of psychology I realize I could be a nurse in any one of these fields. Otherwise, use any one of these topics to help me throughout my career.
