Competency 1: Demonstrate Ethical and Professional Behavior They understand the value in ethical and professional behavior and the impact it has on their work. Social workers must maintain the highest form of ethical practice because of their intense work in the community. Social workers use NASW Code of Ethics to help them make the most ethical decision because they often hold a lot of weight. Social workers also know how to differentiate their personal beliefs even when in difficult situations. They do not mix their values as a social worker with their values as a person and therefore do not let their beliefs affect their work. We discussed that even when I may not agree with a client, they are empowered to be in charge of their own life and therefore I cannot interject my viewpoints or opinions. This will help me make ethical decisions according to the Code of Ethics. Although I may not necessarily agree with this community, that does not mean I should not serve them, it simply means I will have to learn how to work with that bias until I can get rid of it. 1 (b). Write a log discussing each week and the challenges it brought. Discuss ways my personal values were challenged, how I processed through them, and maintained professionalism. (Use reflection and self-regulation to manage personal values and maintain professionalism) Each week I have written a log about the activities I did, assignments I accomplished, and my reaction towards them. I wrote about the challenges I faced, in relation both to my faith and my work. Each week I have to set time aside to reflect on my work week and recognize what I was able to take part in. I also had to reflect on how my person values affected it, or how they were effected because of it. This required a specified time to allow myself to process throughout the week. The weekly logs allow a space for me to celebrate how I maintained professionalism in my challenges, or provided a space to reflect on how I can do better when I’m faced with that challenge again.
