Introduction The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has grown exponentially in the last decade and continues to increase in popularity (NCCIH, 2014). Given the increased prevalence of CAM use in the pediatric population-particularly in chronically ill children-the importance of appropriately screening for its use is critical in the prevention of serious drug interactions and other adverse events resulting from unknowingly combining conventional and non-conventional therapies (Ventola, 2010). Recognizing the deficiency in staff knowledge on CAM and subsequent absence of screening for CAM use in the pediatric population creates an opportunity for education at the staff level. In addition to the well-documented diversity within the pediatric patient population that is treated at this site, the nursing staff is also diverse in culture and experience and requires an educational approach that encourages practical use of information at the bedside. Due to the aforementioned variability within the target audience of bedside nurses, the Adult Education Theory (AET) will be utilized as a conceptual framework to guide the project’s implementation. Evaluation of the educational program’s efficacy as it relates to achievement of learner-centered outcomes will be accomplished through staff verbalization of increased recognition and knowledge of pediatric CAM use and comfort conducting a CAM history using an open, non-judgmental approach.
