Worldwide, cancer is a major public health problem and is the second leading cause of death in the United States. “It is estimated that 595,690 Americans will die from cancer this year, corresponding to about 1,600 deaths per day” (Siegel, 2016). The most common causes of cancer death are cancers of the lung and bronchus, prostate, breast and colorectal. Traditional cancer treatments includes chemotherapy, surgery, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. Because most of these treatments can take a toll on the body and sometimes do more harm than good, some cancer patients are opting for alternative or complementary medicine. Within CAM there are natural products, mind-body medicine, manipulative and body-based practices, movement therapies, whole medical systems, energy therapies and traditional healing practices. Natural products that are used includes vitamins, herbs (botanicals), foods, dietary supplements, probiotics and other products that contain substances found in nature. It is important to note that although the product is labeled as natural does not mean it is safe. Cancer patients who decide take this therapy route must be aware of what is being consumed, is it safe, and will it affect any medications that they may currently be prescribed. According to the Mayo Clinic, “because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn 't consider complementary and alternative therapies such as vitamins or herbal medicines to be drugs (they label them as foods), these products don 't need to undergo FDA testing and approval before they 're sold to consumers.”(para.6).
Mind-body medicine includes meditation, yoga, acupuncture, guided imagery, progressive relaxation, deep-breathing exercises, hypnotherapy, and tai chi and qi gong. These therapies are geared to helping you relax and to reduce stress and relieve symptoms associated with cancer and cancer treatments.
