The most interesting characters to readers are complex characters because they have different characteristics that make them who they are. They also are very much like people in real life; they don’t just have one character trait, they have many. In the novel of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, George Milton and Lennie Small are migrant workers who are trying to reach their dream, like many others during the Great Depression, of owning land and being free. Along the way they meet many new people and make new friends such as Slim. Slim is a mule driver at the ranch where Lennie and George work. Lennie, George, and Slim are three characters who are seen as complex because they have character traits that conflict with one another. One character
Steinbeck’s Literary Elements One thing that makes literature so unique is the different styles authors use to narrate a story. Authors create these styles with literary elements, using them to indirectly convey an idea. These elements, if used properly can attract a reader’s attention and make an enjoyable and suspenseful story. John Steinbeck knew how to apply these elements to make a great book.
The book “of mice and men”(written by john steinbeck) is a well written book created to show what life was like back when this book was written. It is created very well but it still has its downsides, for example, he talks a lot about George and lennie but doesn't give enough examples for the other characters.
The problem with Lennie was that he was mentally disabled, back in the 1930's people did not understand things like that, and had no clue about disabled people. Lennie was sweet and loved thing that were soft. Lennie would put himself in very dangerous situations and with disability he lacked the capacity to control himself physically. Lennie did not understand how strong he was and they damage he would do until after the fact. He also shares the dream of having the small farm and tending to his small rabbit hutch. Since Lennie is mentally disabled he depends on George for almost everything. Lennie is like a small child that has to a have a parent nearby always or he will get into
George plays a major role in this story in the way that he is the friend of Lennie, one of the few workers, the one who killed Lennie, and he also share the dream that Lennie, but he isn’t a static character, he is a dynamic character, he does in fact undergo a significant change.
He knows that George isn't going to hurt him but he knows that George is going to be mad at what Lennie had done. When he says that ¨I've knew George since- I forget when- and he ain't never raised his han' to me with a stick. He's nice to me. He ain't gonna be mean." Since he is always nice to Lennie since he met him. I know that he is always have been nice to him because when his aunt appeared in front of him and she even said "He been doin' nice things for you alla time. When he got a piece of pie you always got half or more'n half. An' if they was any ketchup, why he'd give it all to you." Lennie probably thinks that George would end up forgiving him like before they had arrived Lennie had gotten into trouble and was getting accused of
The obstacles Of Mice and Men The characters in the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck face struggles during this book. It tells the story of Lennie Small and George Milton two migrant ranch workers searching for new job opportunities during the great depression. The struggles George and Lennie are running into are having to be responsible for another person's life. This relates to the title because John Steinbeck had an illusion to the poem To a mouse that's how he came up with the title Of Mice and Men. The authors message to the readers is to realize how much people struggled during the great depression the obstacle george is facing is that he has to take care of Lennie and it's almost like Lennie is George's pet because if you lose
“So you forgot that awready, did you? I gotta tell you again , do I ? Jesus christ, you're a crazy bastard!” George says (4-5). You can infer that the two characters have some issues with each other. In Of Mice And Men, John Steinbeck shows the weaknesses that most of the characters have and the trials they face with those weaknesses. The characters such as Lennie, Crooks and Candy all have something that happens to them in the story that brings out their weaknesses. John Steinbeck portrays the effects that weak people reveal through the characters Lennie, Crooks and Candy.
In the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck there are two main characters; George and Lennie. George and Lennie have a close and confusing relationship. The two men travel together, looking for jobs that will give them the money they need so that they can own their own farm. Lennie is a large man who doesn’t know his own strength and is very reliant upon George. George is the brains behind their relationship and keeps Lennie out of harms way.
When one reads one of John Steinbeck's books, the words flow through their mind and tie together. His book, Of Mice and Men, puts you into the character's viewpoint. When he describes the surroundings of a character you can imagine it happening in front of you. You can see how they move and how they speak, as if the book is more like a motion picture. John Steinbeck showed not only a whole new way to writing when he wrote Of Mice and Men, but made a new way of how the reader perceives the words.
After a quiet and solemn drink with Slim, George dreadfully goes back to the empty bunkhouse. He sits on the bed, and his face falls to his hands. His shoulders move up and down as he sobs. Footsteps sound outside and Candy enters the dark building. George quickly wipes his face, but keeps his head down. Candy turns on the electric light and glances at George with a sympathetic look. George does not move or acknowledge Candy. The room is quiet as a graveyard. Candy seems to be pondering about something to say or do.
In the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the author primarily uses the characters George, Lennie, Curley, and Crooks to present the dilemma of
In his novel Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck uses many characters to show his assertion that man is basically evil. When Curley’s wife confronts Lennie, Crooks, and Candy in Crook’s place, she notes that the others “left all the weak ones here” (77). The “weak” ones that Curley’s wife refer to all attack each other in a vicious circular firing squad. Crooks taunts Lennie about the possibility of George not returning, and takes “pleasure in his torture” as he “[presses] forward for some kind of private victory” (71). Curley’s wife calls Candy and Lennie “a dum-dum and a lousy ol’ sheep” (78) and threatens to get Crooks “strung up on a tree” (81). Meanwhile, all the other characters are the ones that make those Lennie, Candy, Crooks, and Curley’s wife feel “weak” because they are disabled mentally, disabled physically, black, and female, respectively. In this way, Steinbeck shows that all men are basically evil as they do not lend a hand to each other and instead simply attack and prey upon each other.
Lennie paced around the room, pounding his fists on any wall he could find. With a sour face, he checked every nook and cranny between the page and the text for something taking on the form of a door. A way to escape.
For my book report I read Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Of Mice and Men is a fiction book told in the third person. The story is set most likely in the early to mid 1900’s, and most of the story takes place on a ranch in California. The story’s language was out-of-date for our younger generation, and it helped determine the time period. This was an excellent story and in the following paragraphs I’ll talk about the protagonist and antagonist, extra characters, and a summary of the book.
The author, Steinbeck, uses his own personal experience to “serve as an inspiration…” (Johnson 1) when writing this particular story. His past experiences also helped him for the future. Lennie, of all characters, is the least dynamic. He undergoes a significant amount of change and develops throughout the story. He has been isolated with George throughout his life. His sole purpose in life is to make George happy and to own a farm with George and take care of the soft rabbits. Lennie is the most innocent and defenseless. He also is the largest and strongest, which does not help in certain situations. Lennie is the protagonist in the story. He gains the readers sympathy by his intellectual disability and helplessness. Lennie murders things by accident such as the mouse in his pocket, the puppy and Curley’s wife. He enjoys the touch of and somehow uses those murders and experiences to scare him from doing it again. George’s opinion means the most to him.
