Just as important as the network components comprising a LAN are the protocols used for orchestrating their operation, supporting the enterprise computing, communication and collaboration needs of an organization (Kroenke, 2013). The pervasive adoption of the IEEE 802.3 protocol in wired networks is typically called Ethernet and forms the foundation of the Internet today (Kroenke, 2013). The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the Internet Protocol (IP) (TCP/IP) forms the foundation of much of the Internet, and is integral to the performance and reliability of LANs, Wide-Area Networks (WANs) and Metro-Area Networks (MANs) as well (Arend, 1991).
Analysis Of Wired LAN Components
The integrative nature of LANs is designed into each component to ensure the highest level of accuracy, fidelity, stability and reliability of the network. Beginning with the switches throughout a network, the purpose of this component are to ensure connections between multiple computers on the LAN. A switch includes embedded firmware for ensuring packets are transferred reliably across locations using MAC addresses to define locations (Kroenke, 2013). A switch can also be configured to only send data packets to active ports or computers on the LAN, thereby alleviating lost or delayed packets in the overall LAN (Heard, 1983).
