They may be selected to give unusual combinations of weight, stiffness, high temperature performance, strength, corrosion resistance, conductivity, or hardness. They are materials made from two or more constituent materials with significantly different physical or chemical properties. When combined, they produce a material with different characteristics from the individual components. The individual components will remain distinct and separate with the final structure.
