Kudler Fine Foods is a specialty grocery store located in the San Diego area. The first location was opened by Kathy Kudler in June 1998. Currently there are three locations in La Jolla, Del Mar, and Encinitas. Kudler Fine Foods has a variety of domestic and imported food and beverage items including produce, meat, seafood, condiments, packaged foods, cheese, dairy products, wine, and a bakery. Our firm has been hired by Kudler Fine Foods in order to assess their accounting and information technology systems. One of the weaknesses of the current RMS is that there are few requirements concerning manual data entry for the general ledger module. Also, there is no purchasing department for Kudler Fine Foods. The individual departments at each of the locations are responsible for purchasing items for their location. The stores are encouraged to communicate with each other to determine if there are any cost savings available by purchasing items in larger quantities. Also, cash purchases from local farmers can sometimes be an issue with the accounts payable module of the RMS. The asset management and accounting module have not been acquired. This module would help Kudler Fine Foods to better manage their assets and accounting needs. Forecasting sales has been an issue for Kudler Fine Foods in the past. There is no information system in place to help management make decisions on what and how much of a product to have in stock. There are no formal company policies concerning security issues and audits, even though the RMS has imbedded security features regarding user ids, dollar limits, passwords, and limited access. Opportunities and Recommendations One of the areas for improvement is the purchasing and forecasting functions with Kudler Fine Foods. The current RMS is not meeting all of the needs of Kudler Fine Foods in those two areas. The stores need a better way to communicate regarding purchasing and forecasting throughout
