In the early years of computers, engineers had to believe that their contribution to the development of computer technology would produce positive impacts on the people that would use it. During this period of infancy, ethical issues concerning computer technology were almost nonexistent because computers were not as multifaceted back then as they are today. Computer technology plays a crucial role in all aspects of our daily lives. Different forms of computer technology provide unique functionalities that allow people to perform daily activities effectively and efficiently. Although, unique technological features increase people’s proficiency and the general “smartness” of computers, some are extremely wary of the growing sentience in computers.
Aspirational Ethics dictates that, as an engineer, we should strive to better technology in order to help make lives better, help people be more productive, and improve the human experience in general. However, it does obscure the line between making human lives better and giving computers critical thinking and decision making abilities (and its consequences). The gravity of this moral issue can be glanced from the example of self-driving cars. On one hand we’re making driving considerably safer by ensuring that people unfit for driving don’t control the wheel, while a causality of this would be giving a computer the power of making decision regarding human lives. Furthermore, which ethical theory will
In the 21st century nothing has been more influential on the human race than technology has. Technology is a part of anything and everything and the thought of no technology would be considered the apocalypse. Two women, Jane McGonigal, a video game designer, and Sherry Turkle, a technology professor at MIT, both have their own perspectives on technology and how it impacts emotions. McGonigal’s main focus is how video games can be used as a model on how we as humans can make this world a better place. Turkle’s studies are focused on how technology such as cell phones, online avatars, and social media make a whole generations personal development different from past generations. McGonigal is extremely optimistic towards the idea of not only video games but technology as a whole being a huge impact on the improvement of earth’s population. Turkle is more skeptical on technology bringing up thought evoking questions regarding whether technology and its effects on us should be considered good or bad. Even with their contrasting topics both of these women are trying to show how the technology of everyday life alter the emotions. Turkle and McGonigal’s ideas are comparative regarding the emotional effect on people using alternate realities being positive and they also agree that technological communication has become a tool for emotional benefit in society, but their technological views differ on how technology will help us mature as a person.
Both articles discuss the relationship between burgeoning technology and human ethics and put human morality in the critic position because of the unprecedented technologies. Even though technologies tremendously alter human societies and push humans’ ethics borderlines, people still need to hold their ethical boundaries and define their human values to positively contribute to the society.
1) Based on the resources provided above, how would you define technology? Be sure to use your own words!
Technological advances have certainly entered this era to facilitate people’s lives. There is no doubt that some new technology has been created to help operate or effectively manage time in a way that would be beneficial to humans. Technology significantly helps a number of people. A group that greatly benefits with the advances of technology is teenagers. Teens constantly use computers for schoolwork, networking, or knowing anything they want to know with a simple use of their fingertips. Furthermore, with the advances it is no longer needed to leave the household to run an errand such as going out to pay a bill or do some shopping. As technology advances and enters the life of mostly all humans many begin to question how healthy these technological advances truly are. A couple of decades ago kids spent their time outside playing with their friends by the same token with items that did not require the use of electricity. Kids and adolescents would dedicate at least a part of their day to reading books and gaining knowledge from there instead of social media. Distinctively today’s adolescents instead of reading books will go on the internet for a summary and inform themselves in less than 5 minutes, spent their time inside playing video games or on their cellphones allowing technology to be the only thing they know and rely on to have fun or be informed. Moreover, this guides us to the points Ray Bradbury makes in his novel Fahrenheit 451. Bradbury touches on several

To say that computer professionals should be held solely responsible for moral or immoral practice in computer technology is a shortsighted argument, as users of computer technology are just as morally responsible. First, Gotterbarn is correct to say that computer professionals have a moral obligation to consider the possible negative outcomes of their advancements. However, to simply ignore the users of the technology would be highly unethical and irresonsible. To illustrate, consider the immense number of possible applications for computer technologies. Although computer professionals must do everything in their power to prevent negative side effects, accounting for every scenario would be a daunting, if not impossible, task. For example, the iPhone is an incredible general-purpose device capable of enriching its owner’s life. However, some of its basic functions can be used to harm others in an immeasurable number of ways. For instance, the camera can be used in locations where filming is illegal, such as a public washroom. Furthermore, computer technology has been integrated into almost every facet of life. From manufacturing to social media, there is an increasingly varied and numberous body of technology users. This only verifies that predicting the uses of technology is a tremendously difficult task. Finally, one might argue that if a computer professional develops a technology that has the capability to doharm, then he or she should rework their design. Yet if a
Despite the belief that technology is beneficial to humanity, providing us the ability to globally connect with others and reach any sort of information with the touch of a few buttons, technology could be the potential cause of a future breakdown in society. The more we begin to rely on technology, the less we feel the need to partake in real world activities. We do not need to see an individual to speak with them; we only need to send a text message to communicate with them. We do not need to read a book to procure its information; we only need to search its title online to find its plot summary. While the constant availability of technology has helped growth in many fields of society, it does present some drawbacks, possibly stunting intellect and harming mental health.

From getting people from one place to another within hours to connecting them from around the world is only a click away. With endless information and opportunities being at the tip of the fingers, not all technological advances are being used for the purpose that they were created for. Various websites and technology-oriented things are being misused and causing unnecessary problems in people’s lives. My generation had the Internet to interact with, yet it was different from what you would experience now. Technology has immensely grown and with it a better way to remain anonymous, while still be helpful. Just like technology, schools have shifted into something slightly different as well. The school system’s desperately trying to manage the alcohol and drug issues by implementing top-down and bottom-up techniques to help achieve safety for all its students, teachers, and parents.
TTYL, OMG, IDK, and BRB are just a few examples of what an average text looks like today. These acronyms are often used in instant messaging and they continue to change along with the devices they are used on. Without a doubt, the development of technology has forever changed the way people interact and communicate. Online platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have conveniently provided a gateway for people to connect virtually. Technology is everywhere; it streams its way into the homes of many via game consoles, smartphones, tablets, and laptops. As these types of technology continue to evolve, society does as well. In this digital generation, people are known to be on these devices a majority of the time no matter where they are or what they are doing. Nowadays, young adults, such as Millennials, are more likely to interact through technology vs. a physical setting. Therefore, it is no surprise that technology enables people to be within the same vicinity of others, yet in a different technological world. It seems that technology is isolating its users in disguise; meaning it is slowly replacing real world interaction between people. More people now than ever are communicating with their handheld devices instead of meeting face to face (Digital Nation). As people continue to conform to these familiarized states of communication, technology continues to gradually isolate them from real-life interaction through text message, social media, and online gaming.
With this new glass of Merlot by my side, I sit and wonder at the amazement of technology. Each velvety sip opens me up in my corner a little more just as technology has done so for the world. But now I must go off and ponder further on into an important philosophical question of whether this technology, endless as it has come to be, should be considered as a thing that has brought out the best or the worst in society. How complex a question! Surely I could easily look back fondly and count the many ways that technology and its manifold presence has been nothing but a blessing, not only to facilitating human kind, but also our intrinsic pursuit of society. But now, as easy as that might be, it would be a more healthy venture to play the
