Task 1 (Achieved)
Analyse the concept of creation and evolution from the perspective of the Catholic Church, explaining the components and key features of their belief. Your answer should include:- The Biblical foundation of the belief; How the belief has developed over time including Christian philosophy; Recent teaching concerning the concepts of science, creation and evolution.
The Biblical foundation of the belief
The Bible says that God created the earth and everything on it in 6 days and rested on the 7th.
“1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth... 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light... 6 And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.”... 11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.”... 14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years... 20 And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.”... 24 And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds:the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.”...26 Then God
The principle idea behind creationism is that the origin of natural objects is supernatural. As an example, the Christian tradition is that the land, sky, plants and animals were created by a supernatural or also known as God. As Young and Strode state, “Within this basic idea are themes are variations; some cultures believe that plants and animal species are unchanging,
In the literal sense, God made the heavens and the earth. Before God spoke, the earth did not exist, it was empty and formless. He said, "Let there be light," and there was light. This is the first day of the creation of the world.
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” God is the creator of all things in this world, holy and unholy. It was him who created the birds, trees, oceans, and seas. He said “let there be light” and there was light. Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all of the earth and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” There has been attempt to duplicate the almighty God’s creation, although, there are many differences, there are some mind blowing similarities.
In Genesis God created the earth in six days and declared rest for the seventh day. On day one, God created light to part it from darkness, calling the light “day” and the darkness “night”. On day two, he created the sky, allowing him to create land and sea on day three. God created the sun, moon, and the stars to give light to the earth and to govern and separate the day and the night" on the fourth diurnal (Fairchild, 2013). These elements would also serve to establish days, season, and years. On the fifth day God created all the organisms on the land, sea, and sky and made sure they would flourish.
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. …the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” In the Christian faith the world was created by God in the sequence of seven days. Throughout those days he made light and darkness, water and sky; he made the animals of the water and the animals
THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH IN THE BEGINNING GOD CREATED THEN THERE WAS LIGHT AS IN GENESIS, CHAPTER ONE, STATED. THE LIGHT GOD CALLED DAY THE DARK HE CALLED NIGHT CREATED A HUMAN BEING THERE IN BEGAN MAN’S
In 1600 BC it was completely dark outside. No one lived and nothing roamed the earth. The earth was created by the land and water god and the nature was created by the nature god. What had not yet been created was the sun and the moon. Later in 1700 BC the god of making human life created 2 people.
Then God made the land and water. He named the land “earth” and the water was called “sea”. Plants and animals were put on the land and fish and the other water creatures were in the sea. There were birds that flew above land. God told the all the animals, the fish, and the birds to be fruitful and multiply.
We present the first 6 days of creation in the following order: Day 1: God “separated light from darkness” and called them day and night, respectively. Day 2: God created the atmosphere, pointing out that there is water on the planet and water in the sky. In addition, he separated the dry soil from water. Day 3: God created the vegetation: trees, plants, etc. Day 4: God created the sun, the moon and the stars.
This narrative, which describes how God created the universe in six days, can be found in the first few paragraphs of the Bible. It is said that on Day One, God created the heavens and the earth and allowed there to be light upon the earth. God then allowed a separation of waters above from the waters below on day Two; this separated the skies and the seas. On the third day, God formed dry land and allowed the earth to sprout vegetation. God then allowed the heavenly lights to appear on the earth on Day Four. On Day Five, God created animals to inhabit the earth. The sixth and final day of creation of the universe saw God creating other animals such as carnivores and humans to inhabit the earth as well (The literal interpretation of the Genesis One Creation account, 2007).
The ongoing scientific investigation of how exactly evolution occurred and continues to occur has been an argumentative idea amongst society since Darwin first articulated it over a century ago. The scientific basis of evolution accounts for happenings that are also essential concerns of religion; both religion and science focus on the origins of humans and of biological diversity. For instance, in the reading “Truth Cannot Contradict Truth,” Pope John Paul II, addressing the Pontifical Academy of Science, discussed the matter of God as creator of man. The Pope explains that men cannot relate to animals because men are superior. The reasoning for that is because God created humans under his likeness. What the church is saying about mankind
On the third day god creates the land and the sea through the command to the water be gathered together in one place and let the dry land appear'. Next he creates the grass and other foliage such as trees and plants with fruits and seeds.
Pope Francis once emphasized, "When we read in Genesis the account of Creation, we risk imagining that God was a magician, with such a magic wand as to be able to do everything," (Taylor Wofford). This quote visualizes many of the Catholic followers' point of view when it comes to the theory of evolution. These people are also known as creationists, because they believe in the story of Creation that takes place in the book of Genesis. However, there are many perspectives that withhold the Catholic position on evolution, and they include Pope Pius XII, Pope John Paul II, and my own. These viewpoints will assist in bringing better acknowledgement to this contradicting subject.
In six days God created the universe, the earth, and every living thing on it. This includes human beings, who were made in Gods own image. God created Adam and Eve to have an unobstructed relationship with him, He placed them in a paradise called the Garden of Eden and gave them freedom to live in friendship and trust with him. God saw that everything he created was good and He rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2). God left Adam and Eve in the garden with specific instructions: they are NOT to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
If the question was posed as to what is the debate between creationism vs. evolution consist of, the thought that it is ‘“God did it” vs. “Natural processes did it,”’ (Scott, 2004) may arise. Science cannot absolutely prove or disprove Creation or Evolution. Yet scientist and the remainder of society use creationism and evolution to prove our existence. Creationist believe in the Christian account of the origin as recorded in Genesis. Creationism is the belief that statements such as “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (NIV) found in Genesis 1:1 and also “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (NIV) found in John 1:1. Evolution is the belief that everything just changed over
