Spreckles Organ Society’s Organ Concert Dr. Carol Williams’s organ plays were just fantastic. Despite the fact that seeing the instrument called, “organ” was my first time, it was pretty impressive how that instrument worked. All the pedals and the three layers of keyboards were just as complicated as a calculus math problem. The concert was played at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion at Balboa Park. The surrounding was not too bad. Although the concert day was Sunday, it was quite crowded. Besides the crowdedness, the surroundings were not too rough. All ages were welcome to seat and enjoy the sounds of organ. I saw mostly old aged audiences and I saw a little amount of college aged audiences with the music report information on their hands. …show more content…
The pieces were quite odd for me at the first time, first hearing, but I got used to it at the end of the each piece. “The Gospel Train” and “Little David, Play On Your Harp” were African-American Spiritual songs, which I kind of enjoyed, because I was also, very spiritually active. The last song, “Precious Lord Take My Hand” was very calming songs. I liked the lyrics of the song. The lyrics were very touchy that it made me ponder after the applause. The next song, “Oopsey Daisey My Sweetheart” was the piece that Dr. Carol Williams wrote. I liked the melodies and harmonies overall. It was very interesting music piece. I wish I could get a contact with her and wanted to ask a few questions about this piece of music. Also the singer, Martha Jane Weaver, sang this song great that both the singer, write of the music, and the player received a great attention from the audiences. The concert was very good overall. I am not interested in the classical music concert, but this concert made me thing different towards the classical concerts. Also I learned about the instrument called organ, very interesting instrument. I strongly recommend going to the organ concert. Especially if Dr. Carol Williams and Martha Jane Weaver are starring, you should definitely attend. No regret
The first dance in the seconds act was called “Testimony”. This piece kind stuck me by surprise at first because it was a spiritual song danced by two white people. The piece in its self was great, but I was just taken away because of the fact that it was two white dancers. The second piece was called American pie. I can say I didn’t actually think it was going to be that song. It was performed by two beautiful females. The symbolism of patriotism not only stood out in the moves, but in the music and the clothing. They were wearing jean pants. People sometimes forget how the costume helps portrait how piece is
A few pieces gave me emotional responses .The theme from “Jaws” made me tense up a little, the music reminded me of the movie and made very conscious of my surroundings. I didn’t want anything to happen to me. As I mentioned earlier I enjoy Star Wars and Harry Potter, so when they played the music I was a little excited about these music pieces being played. The highlight musical piece would have to be the Suite from “Star Wars”. All of the pieces were great but,
Before the show officially started the performers went on stage to their designated spots and were practicing and tuning their instruments I am assuming. It was cool hearing all the different instruments at once hearing the different sounds it actually didn’t sound that bad.
For this piece I felt like we had very good rhythmic accuracy throughout the whole song. I also feel like we had very good staggered breathing and it helped the songs flow. Our tone was good throughout the song but it could have been improved by us opening up more and giving it a more “opera” sound. We also missed some words especially at the ending and starting at measure 29 through that stanza we were a little timid and not sure of ourselves. I think we knew the notes but weren't sure of the words entirely even though we knew them. This song was also pretty good
On April 14, 2016 I attended the Dvorak Cello Concerto at the Tennessee Theatre in Knoxville, Tennessee. The instruments that were being played were made up of the whole symphony orchestra. In addition, the instrument that was featured was the cello. The reasoning for this is because there was a special guest musician, Susie Yang who was performing with the orchestra and she played the cello. The structure of the performance consisted of three different main pieces of music with different sections within them. In addition, this was the first time I had been to the Tennessee Theatre. The theatre was very intriguing because of the elegance that came with it. The décor was very nice and looked expensive. It is exactly what I imagined when I thought of the setting for a symphony. It was well lit with beautiful crown molding in the celling. In addition, there were lovely curtains blocking an area that looked to be a balcony beside the stage. In addition, there was back drop lights on the walls highlighting pieces that looked to be Grecian Urns.
The first piece that was performed was the theme to “The Force Awakens”. The next piece played was the Superman theme, then the theme for Episodes 1,2,3. The “Star Trek” theme was played. They then went back to Star Wars and played “The Parade of Ewoks”, then the main theme, and to conclude they ended it with Darth Vader’s theme. Overall I really enjoyed the performance not only because of music they also incorporated scenes from the movies into each of the pieces they performed. It was really fun and engaging I met some new people who were also fans of Star Wars. The pieces that I enjoyed the most were the “Star Wars” main theme, “Superman” theme, and “The Force Awakens”. The main theme to me is a classic. I think whether you are a Star Wars fan or not you can’t resist humming along to this theme. The “superman” theme was another favorite. I was glad they played this, because Superman is one of my favorite heroes and I enjoy watching the Superman movies. This theme makes me feel like a superhero myself. I liked “The Force Awakens because I watched in the theatres when it came out and it was a great movie. All he performers looked like they really enjoyed what they were doing and wanted to put out a great
The transition between movements was nice and one could definitely picture a story each musical piece was trying to tell. The pianist was highly involved in each musical piece, and visually displayed the mood each composer had set for their pieces. I enjoyed the way pauses were set up through the whole performance and also within each piece the pianist played. In my opinion the audience could easily follow Dr. Hesse's performance because of the obvious changes in dynamics and use of different modes. Some pieces were fast and uplifting, some were completely opposite.
The Bargemusic concert hall is not a large venue, but it certain provided an adequate environment for a single piano player performance. The acoustics were exceptional for such a small concert
This concert overall was interesting and entertaining. The way that the ensemble is split into trios and groups and the short and plentiful songs provide a refreshing change continuously giving the audience a chance to hear different play styles. The only critique I have of the pieces is that at times they had a disorganized sound that I did not recognize as pleasant to listen to. The emotion I was able to leave with was a lightened mood, but I did not have any deep emotional connection to the music. My favorite piece of the night was “The Obstinate” because of the amazing french horn solo that is played halfway through and leads into the conclusion of the song. The style of this concert was new to me and I enjoyed becoming a part of a musical era and style that is not something that I would typically indulge in. The art behind these pieces was shown through the passion of the performers
For this concert the only instrument played were pianos. As stated before they were played by Josiah Stocker and Hyeeum Hahm. Because of the lack of vocals, I
I wasn't entertained by any of the pieces they played or by anything specific related to the actual orchestra. One thing I did find to be entertaining was people watching. A gentleman sitting three seats over from me looked like he was asleep, although his wife looked like she very much enjoying the concert. During one of the compositions, she looked over at him and hit him on the shoulder as to wake him up. If I had to guess I would say that she made him go. Observing the audience and their actions and reactions was enjoyable. I could tell each person had a different view on a song, or a different opinion about an instrument. Noticing things like that is what got me through the symphony.
Music is defined as the vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of music. What truly exemplifies this definition is the performance entitled This Little Light of Mine in which performers, Donald Craig Manuel and Charles Lloyd Jr, took the stage to deliver a beautiful duo that’s consisted of Mr. Manuel’s Baritone voice and Mr. Lloyd’s performance on the piano. Mr. Donald Manuel performed twelve compositions in which ten of them were sacred pieces that expressed how much he loved the Lord and the other four were taken from major events he performed for such as: Festival of the Lion King at Hong Kong Disneyland, major productions abroad the Disney Dream, and musical numbers from popular Disney films. Even though each of these pieces were different in context they had numerous similarities such as: all of them being polyphonic, crescendo and decrescendo were used extensively, dynamics were used frequently, each piece was set to a walking tempo (Andante), each piece had the qualities of an opera, and he used vibrato in all his compositions. Even though all his performed pieces were brilliantly performed, the three compositions that stood out to me were: Ride on King Jesus by Hall Johnson, This Little Light O’Mine by John Work, and Be prepared by E. John and T. Rice.
listening, I thought that it was a very gentle piece that somewhat reminded me of the beginning
The first organist who presented their talents was Raina Wood, and her song choices were very much of
Then a woman came in, wearing a colorful dress, a light green with colorful flowers on it. she was holding a violin, Daniel, the composer introduced her, her name was Jennifer Frautschi. She started playing the first piece by Sibelius with her Violin, it was amazing. The sound of her violin was relaxing and thrilling at the same time. They kept the audience engaged by changing the rhythm up and down, like waves. You feel relaxed than out of the sudden you feel excited. I listened to a full 12 minutes of this without moving a muscle. Entrancing and spectacular. What a talent! I could not predict what is coming next, every movement has its own flavor, and its own taste, but in some way, it was related to the previous one. After Jennifer finisher her play, everyone stood and applaud for over four minutes, but she deserves that. They are all were enjoying the moment and no one looked at anything except the stage. I really enjoyed this work of Sibelius, I enjoyed the sound of the violin the most, there something in it that makes me excited in somehow. I loved every second she was
