Athletes from over one-hundred high schools and one-hundred-eighty colleges were studied in order for researchers to investigate the epidemiology of concussions and to compare the rates of concussions among high school and collegiate athletes. Two injury surveillance systems, High School Reporting Information Online (RIO), and the National Collegiate Athletic Association Injury Surveillance system collected data and this data was analyzed to calculate concussion rates, describe patterns, and evaluate potential risk factors for sports-related concussions. Everybody in the league likes to see big hits, so does the fans. But what the fans don’t like is the best players getting hurt because of a big hit. Concussions are important because if not treated properly the person who has the concussions can be injured even more. Some signs of death of athletes have come from a concussion causing them to hurt themselves.
Many Americans love sports, including football, basketball and hockey. What most people do not think about, is the injury and risks that come along with playing sports. Concussions are a major part of this, and can cause severe brain damage and loss of basic functions. Many sports leagues, however, do not have the right protocol to increase player safety. People might think a concussion is only short term, and that the person who received it can go back to their sport once they are deemed ready by medical professionals, however, this is not the case. The side effects of a concussion can last for years, and if the player is not healed completely, it increases the chances of that person sustaining a new concussion.Therefore, athletes should be required to stop playing their sport for a certain amount of time, even after they stop showing symptoms of a concussion.

As college sports become more competitive, head injuries are increasing and cause many athletes to be diagnosed with concussions. Concussions are common in football, but many other sports have just as many or higher numbers of concussions (Grasgreen 2). According to the NCAA, they oversee “89 championships in 23 sports each year. There are more than 400,000 student-athletes competing in three divisions at over 1,000 colleges and universities within the NCAA” (Rivera 4).
Playing sports is seen as all fun, but when the majority of professional athletes have suffered a concussion or some type of head injury at least once in their career, it stops being fun. Many major league and professional sports teams need to start to make changes to protective equipment, but the leagues also need to introduce stricter rules and regulations along with mandatory equipment for all players to lessen the chance of serious head injuries.
