Confederate Flag The problem that has arisen about the Confederate or battle flag is that a man killed a bunch of people and had a Confederate flag in his hand also a lot of people think it is a sense of racism according to google 43% of Democrats think it is a symbol of racism, while a majority of Republicans 56% think it is a symbol of southern pride, and only 20% say that it is both a symbol of southern pride and racism. I believe that the flag is for southern pride. The Confederate flag is a symbol of southern heritage and southern pride. Just because the south had a lot of slaves doesn't mean that everybody wanted a slave. Most of the people in the war on the Confederate side did not even own slaves they were fighting because they wanted to keep the culture …show more content…
The Confederate flag called “Bars and Stars” first appeared March 1861. The flag represents the Confederate side in the war. The flag wasn't made as a symbol but as a particular banner. You can't make a “safe-zone” for the flag because it did not stay just the flag of the soldiers. The Confederate government made the flag a part of the confederacy itself which made the issues of slavery and states rights. With that being the case the never ending debate over the flag stated. In 1862, many southern leaders didn't like the flag because of the same reason they wouldn't adopt it the year before. It looks to much like the stars and stripes. With knowing some of the history about the flag and how the problem with the flag started my opinion hasn't changed. I think the flag is about southern pride and heritage not racism. Most southerners put the flag up at a culture attack time on “hillbillies”. People were being picked on for how they talked and look. So they put up the flag to say they're proud of who they are and don't care about what other people think. They didn't put it up to be racist or trying to start problems with colored
I do dislike what the confederate flag stands for, but I do see the need to allow for it to stay. Now as I said before I do not support what the flag means, but I do support the first amendment that guarantees freedom of speech. Banning the confederate flag would be an instance of censorship that would set a dangerous precedence. You set the precedence that anything that is found offensive can be banned. You allow for censorship to ban your freedom of speech because some found it offensive. I always quote the great philosopher known as Voltaire when situations such as these arrive. “I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.” Now weather the state chooses to remove the flag from public property
On January 1992 the NAACP put in affect a boycott on South Carolina to pressure the state to remove the Confederate flag off of its Statehouse in Columbia. The boycott is what initially brought life to this issue. The NAACP’s removal request is based on the fact that they, the anti-flag groups, claim that the meaning of the Confederate flag is one of hate and discrimination. On the other hand, there are other groups that believe differently whom are called the pro-flag groups. They claim that the Confederate flag is a sign of heritage and should stay on South Carolina’s Statehouse. Anti-flag articles are more likely to be found published in well-known Liberal magazines, when credible pro-flag articles were hard
In America the confederate flag is often known as a symbol of slavery and abuse. Daniel Barkley argued a completely different argument in this text. He stated the confederate flag was removed from South Carolina’s State Capitol because African Americans began to make this their “black power flag”.
The Confederate Flag is a demoralizing symbol to many African Americans in the United States. To a number of African Americans because they think this flag is a symbol of slavery and the domination whites had over slaves during the time of the civil war. This flag is
So why get rid of this flag? Being a nation that prohibits slavery in written law, some Americans who continue to believe the false rumor that the flag represents slavery and racism or are less educated with the history behind the flag and want to get rid of it. Our society has represented the Confederate flag in a disrespectful manner and needs to change that.
The confederate flag was used in the civil war where the south separated from the rest of the states. The reason for this was to keep slavery to not loose labor, they also didn't want to treat african american slaves as equals. The flag was used as the most popular symbol for the confederates. We fought our self and lost so many lives for this cause. In the end the north won, the south(confederate) join the u.s once more and slavery was not allowed and was passed as a law.
The Confederate flag has now become a hot issue for South Carolina, which is the last state to have the original Confederate flag still flying on its Statehouse. What got the State’s attention was the economic boycott of South Carolina that was announced on January 1992 by the NAACP to pressure the State to remove the Confederate flag off of its Statehouse in Columbia. The NAACP’s removal request is based on the fact that they, the anti-flag groups, claim that the meaning of the Confederate flag is one of hate and discrimination. On the other hand, there are other groups that believe differently whom are called the pro-flag groups. They claim that the Confederate flag is a sign of heritage
One of the most trending topics in America right now is the Confederate Flag and whether or not it 's racist. 42 percent think the flag represent southern heritage and the other 42 percent think it 's racist and should be taken down. 75 percent believe it 's racist and only one in ten will agree that it is southern heritage. Depending on what region is asked about if it is racist, there are different answers. The Midwest say it is racist and the south, of course, say it 's not racist. A poll showed that African Americans, Democrats, and the highly educated were more likely to perceive the flag negatively. The Confederate States of America came into existence on February 4, 1861. It had six states at first and they were the Deep South. Those states were South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana. After April 1861 four upper south states joined. They were Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Arkansas. They made they 're own court system and congress. It reflected a lot of the American government. The confederate flag should be taken down because it is a symbol of hate, rebellion and racism.
From the 1860's to the 2000's a lot has happened with war and people's opinions on many things , Stories are getting jumbled up including this flag’s history because it has been in history for so long and people are adding their opinions that are ridiculous and that may also be one of the things that has influenced people's thoughts on the flag and not only that but the flag came from a very rough time in history and in ways it is very understanding that people got their thoughts influenced and that's why we should should take the time and help them have a better understanding on the confederate flags meaning. The rebel flag has and will always be bashed because of its history, but it is not completely racist and is not intended to be used to show hatred because of the color of someone's skin, it was the people who got a hold of the flag and flew it on their beliefs and that's one of the leading causes to the conflict on the flags meaning. The confederate flag is 154 years
The Confederate Battle flag is one of the most recognized symbols in the United States. It is not always a welcome symbol in today’s society. Take for instance the state of South Carolina having to remove it from its statehouse on April 12, 2000. The reason it is not always welcome is because people often misinterpret its true meaning. It is not a symbol of hatred but, a symbol of southern pride and honor. The pride and honor of all the men and women who carried it the flag into battle fighting for what they believed in, Southern independence.
“Symbol of a brave past or banner of treason?” Kevin Baker asks this in his article titled That Flag. This is the question that many people have tried to answer. The Confederate Battle Flag has been used to send many different messages to the public, and depending on who you talk to it holds different meanings. As explained in the article titled Political culture, religion, and the Confederate Battle Flag debate in Alabama written by Jonathan I. Leib and Gerald R. Webster. The article explains that, “Many traditional white southerners view the Confederate Battle Flag as emblematic of the sense of duty and sacrifice of their ancestors during the Civil War and Reconstruction. They argue that the Civil War was not about the institution of slavery
The confederate battle flag is much different than the rebel flag that is known today, the battle flag went through three distinct phases and the rebel flag was none of them. The first flag of the Confederate army was adopted in spring of 1861, and it had seven stars to represent the seven states that seceded from the Union. By
So many people are talking about whether or not the Confederate Flag is racist, and whether or not it should be banned in the U.S. Why are so many people even considering it? The Confederate Flag is definitely not racist. It represents a time of racism and discrimination, but does that truly mean that the flag itself is racist? Just because the flag represents the Confederate States of America, the slave states, it doesn’t mean that the flag is blatantly racist. The flag is only a symbol, a piece meant to represent that time.
The Confederate flag is justified because people in the south shouldn’t be flying the flag even though it’s their flag they are just making the U.S. look bad when they are flying the American flag and the Confederate flag. The Confederate flag was a symbol of pride for most of the southerners, they thought they could have put their flag on anything they could and they fought for it and wanted to keep their slaves. I think the Confederate flag should have been taken down a long time ago because they shouldn’t have taken this down before we had the United States flag out and put it in front of the White house instead of the Confederate flag flying out there before we had the American flag made.
The author mentioned that some citizens are still perturbed by the Confederate flag. While the number is slowly waning, many citizens were a part of the civil rights movement. They watched racist people protest against them using the flag as a symbol of racism, oppression, and hatred. To some, the flag may serve as a permanent reminder that racism is not truly dead in America.
