Although the confederate flag was not originally created to be a hate symbol, it became one over the years. If there is any symbol or material item that offends a certain ethnic group, it can, and will most likely, be labeled as a racist insignia. When something goes as far as offending and restricting the rights of men and their equality, then it is racist and should not be tolerated to fly above a man’s home or dwelling. If an item such as the confederate flag plays such a significant role in history, it should be remembered in a museum. By putting it into a museum, it will be respected, not forgotten, and the people whose lives had been affected by the Confederate Flag are not in any situations where they feel scared, at risk of harm, inadequate or unequal; the people shall not be persecuted or feel as though they are being persecuted. The Confederate Flag should not fly amongst the people any longer. The past is the past. During recent years, the Confederate Flag has been used as a memorial symbol for fallen …show more content…
During this time The Confederate Flag was “also periodically flown by the Ku Klux Klan” (Hanson.) A contributing factor to the Ku Klux Klan’s efforts in detaining a race from their full economic, social, and political advancements, was the Confederate Flag. The history that the flag holds brought the Confederate Flag into a scene of hatred towards another race, and the platform for the inequality against the second half majority of the American Public. At the time of the iconic Civil Rights Movement, “the Confederate flag represented state resistance to the rights of African Americans.” (Teaching for Change.) Man against man, fighting for two different things in a time of spite. These were the years of brutal force, the idea of integration in the school system and other political, social, or economic jobs, were being fought with physical abuse, but also with a flag of a tortured
In America the confederate flag is often known as a symbol of slavery and abuse. Daniel Barkley argued a completely different argument in this text. He stated the confederate flag was removed from South Carolina’s State Capitol because African Americans began to make this their “black power flag”.
Within the United States of America, arguments, involving the Confederate Flag, are solved every sngle day. However, some controversies have managed to carry on from the 1800’s until present day without any solution. The text and symbolic meaning behind the “Confederate Flag” is a perfect example. The Confederate Flag is one of America’s most embattled symbolic controversies. Created in 1861in a battle between the South, Confederates, and the North, Union, two men by the name P.G.T. Beauregard and Congressman William P. Miles designed and created a flag that would represent the true southern pride and demands that would not only bring about conflict with one half of the nation but also with our American society today.
In the past couple of year, there has been a controversial battle over the flying of the Confederate Flag on government buildings. The controversy has really started to stir up in the southern states such as South Carolina, Mississippi, and Georgia. On January 30, 2001, the state of Georgia changed its flag, removing the large Confederate battle cross from the 1956 design and replacing it with the state seal of Georgia. Now, the state of Mississippi is the only state that fearlessly displays the Southern Cross in its state flag. Though several Southerners see the Confederate Flag as a symbol of southern pride and heritage, many others see the flag as a dishonorable reminder of slavery and segregation in the south. Although this flag is under great controversy in the southern states, there is no reason why this flag should not be flown from government buildings because it isn’t demoralizing African Americans in the symbolization of slavery, segregation and domination although it is used by many hate groups across the united states they too need a history lesson because the confederate flag only started as a battle flag that some blacks fought under and held with pride.
Ever wonder why rebelious symbols such as the confederate flag are still allowed its showing betrayal how the country was split in half and how we shed so much blood cause of that. You could be walking across the street and see the confederate flag and you may think nothing of it or you might think of all the lives lost and the separation in the country.
The Confederate Battle flag is one of the most recognized symbols in the United States. It is not always a welcome symbol in today’s society. Take for instance the state of South Carolina having to remove it from its statehouse on April 12, 2000. The reason it is not always welcome is because people often misinterpret its true meaning. It is not a symbol of hatred but, a symbol of southern pride and honor. The pride and honor of all the men and women who carried it the flag into battle fighting for what they believed in, Southern independence.
The confederate flag is also a symbol of hate. The people who fought under the confederate flag fought to keep slavery. The flag had been used in the 1950’s and after as a symbol of opposing the civil war movement. The confederate flag has been adopted as a symbol of members of the white supremacist and KKK movement. .
The Confederate Monuments that are standing are a symbol of our great nations life. These monuments being taken down is solving nothing and doing nothing but causing madness between the American people. These monuments should stay to give people knowledge and teach them of what our state once was and still is. The Monuments of the Confederate soldiers that are scattered across the United States are symbols of freedom in our country. People are declaring that the monuments be taken down or moved because they are “racist.” Simply removing monuments and moving them so they are out of sight is not new. The Inca Empire of South America removed icons of conquered peoples’ gods and held them hostage in a temple in the Incan capital of Cuzco. In our time, the post-Soviet Russian government removed many statues of Lenin and others, which are now in Muzeon Arts Park in Moscow. The thoughts of most American people today are mostly racist thoughts when the conversation of Confederate monuments start up. 70% of the American people think that the Confederate monuments are racist and should be taken down. The people that know it is not racism, should take a stand and fight for our freedom once more.
Throughout the years there has been many flags that represent something unique of a nation. Flags that symbolizes our freedom and pride of becoming part of that nation. These flags give us the motivation and strength to fight until the end for the protection of our nation. However, as years went by, many different flags have brought about many controversies that have resulted in the fall and disappearance of them, all except one, the Confederate Flag. The Confederate flag is a well-known historical flag all around the United States and possibly around the world. However, this flag has provoked many controversial situations in the nation due to the way individuals interpret it.
Symbolism over substance is the idea that getting rid of the confederate flag will stop racism or change the past, but there is no substance to that, removing the flag won't end racism or change the history. This quote is an example of how the Confederate flag is not just a symbol, “The flag as we know it was born not as a symbol, but as a very practical banner. The commanders of the Confederate army in Virginia (then known as the army of the Potomac) sought a distinctive emblem as an alternative to confederacy's first national flag - the stars and bars – to serve as a battle flag,” (Coski, 2). This quote suggests that the flag isn't supposed to represent racism, it was just suppose to represent the Confederate army in battles. However, some may say that the Confederate flag is a symbol of racism but this is untrue.
The American South. An area full of rich history and the home to some of the nation’s largest conflicts throughout history, such as the civil war and the civil rights movement. Southerners have always been proud of their heritage despite its rocky parts and display it for all to see with a 150 year old flag. This is proving to be problematic, though, as the Confederate flag they are all so proud of, is really only 50 years old and has been associated with ideals of white supremacy and racism. Some Southerners and other Americans choose to not believe the truth about the flag, others were never taught the truth. However, it is incredibly important in forming an opinion on the flag, and to whether or not the flag must be removed from state buildings. And the truth is, due to its historical affiliation to racist whites in the South, white supremacy groups, and recent events such as the Charleston Shooting, the Confederate rebel flag should not be flown on state buildings as it is not culturally sensitive to African American people who have been targeted by these people.
To help narrow this divide, the confederate flag and any other symbols with possible racist connotations should be removed from the public world as much as possible. The main argument that confederate flag supporters tend to have is the fact that the flag is a “symbol of heritage” for southerners. However, if one were to look at the history of the United States, one would realize that the Confederacy was formed in opposition to the abolition of the institution of slavery. The Confederates believed in a cause that they were willing to fight and possibly die for, and that cause was one of enslaving fellow humans. One has to look no farther than the declaration of secession by the confederate states, Mississippi’s declaration states
For the past few months there has been lots of controversy of wither or not the Confederate Flag should be taken down. The removal of the Confederate Flag had been brought up again because a man by the name of Dylan Roof had shot and killed 9 innocent people who were attending Bible study at the Emanuel AME in Charleston, South Carolina, Wednesday June 17, 2015. People all over the United States have been arguing over this topic, no one can agree on wither or not we should take down the flag. In my opinion the flag and any other historical monument that relates to the Civil War should be left alone.
The Confederate Battle Flag represented the Southern Nation, this not true. The Southern Nation had 3 different types of national flags during the course of the war. Which all 3 have been modified because resemblance of the United States Flag. The other Confederate Flag was the parade flag. People have taken it upon themselves to incorporate the “Southern Pride” upon their own terms and meanings, which in no shape or form was the reason why the Confederate Flag was created for or intended. All they needed was a clever tricky way to fool the enemy.
The author mentioned that some citizens are still perturbed by the Confederate flag. While the number is slowly waning, many citizens were a part of the civil rights movement. They watched racist people protest against them using the flag as a symbol of racism, oppression, and hatred. To some, the flag may serve as a permanent reminder that racism is not truly dead in America.
People don’t know the history behind confederate symbols. A great percentage of those who are fighting for the public display of the symbols might not even know what they mean, and probably before this was going on, they may not have cared about the presence of such statues. So, confederate symbols should be placed in museums for people to get a better understanding about our history. For example, symbols like the Confederate flag and statues of so-called heroes like Robert E. Lee are being removed, and this has caused riots and violence, driven by white
