Do you think that schools should ban the Confederate Flag in the class rooms? Don’t we have the right to say what we want? Isn’t is a part of our history? Banning the Confederate Flag is absurd. If they are going to ban the Confederate Flag, then they need to ban all flags that are considered offensive. Do we even have the right to say what we want? If they interdict the flag than it is restricting our rights. The first amendment states that we have freedom of speech. We should be able to display our affection based on our freedom of speech. At Christiansburg High School they had suspended over than 20 people, for showing their affection towards the flag. They were showing that they should keep the flag because it is a piece of our history. Sometimes we think that we never have the freedom to say what we want to. …show more content…
If you prohibit the flag then we cannot learn about it, or any of the battles that the flag flew in. The Battle of Manassas was the very first battle that the flag flew in. Why would you ban something that was so important to our history, and still is? The flag is represented to be about the Thirteen Confederate States. Most people only know about the Confederate Battle Flag. They do not know about the National Confederate Flag because they didn’t know the history about it. If you ban one flag that is offensive, so why not ban all that are offensive? If you ban one flag that is considered offensive then why not ban all flags that are considered offensive? It is not fair to ban one flag that is so called offensive. They need to ban all flags that are offensive if they ban one. If they ban the Confederate Flag then they need to ban foreign sports flags, gay pride flags, and etcetera. Those flags can be offensive to most Americans. If they ban the Confederate Flag then they need to ban all flags that are considered offensive to
Nine people were killed in a church in south Carolina. The killer a several pictures that showed him with the confederate flag. So the South Carolina government voted to take down the flag. This caused a lot of debate. I believe that the confederate Flag stands for bravery in what you believe in. I think that the government is overreacting with this whole situation.
Do you think the confederate flag is a racial profile symbol? Many people don’t think it should be taken down but I think it should be taken down. Three reasons why the confederate flags should be removed are the flags are treason, it was a symbol of trying to keep slavery, and Southerners believed it’s free speech to show the flags and it’s not freedom.
Yes, I know we’ve all been inundated with press coverage over the recent Confederate flag debate, but it’s still an important question worth discussing. I’ve always been interested in the American Civil War and especially the post-war Reconstruction era. I intend to provide a brief history of the Confederate flag and argue that, although individuals have the right to fly any flag they wish, the Confederate flag should not be displayed in
It was merely an irrelevant piece of cloth that was waved in the air during battle. Banning the flag would do nothing, it wouldn’t prevent hate crimes against African Americans, nor would it give white supremacists any less ability to do harm. All it would do is erase a piece of our history’s image, regardless of how it makes us as Americans look. The Confederate Flag does easily give an image of hatred and violence, which is what was intended when it was first designed and created.
About 150 years ago, the Civil War ended, and Reconstruction era began. African American slaves were free, but were looked at as different than everybody else. It wasn’t until the late 1950s and early 60s that African Americans finally felt equal to whites. Today, even though slavery and segregation has ended in the United States, racism is an extremely important topic. African Americans and people of other races are still facing the problems they did 100 years ago. One symbol of this is the Confederate flag. The Confederacy supported slavery, a now proclaimed ‘unconstitutional’ act. The Confederate flag is still being flown in some Southern states today, and they are offending thousands of United States citizens. The Confederate flag should be taken down in all public places because it represents a crude act of African American labor, it is used by white supremacist groups, and represents a rebellious group of people.
The controversy of the showing of the confederate flag is something huge. You have the bunch that does not like the flag, and then there is the group of individuals the support and fly the flag with pride. There are five states that have laws, in their own state, that state it is illegal to burn or deface the confederate flag. On surface, these state laws would seem to conflict the 5-4 decision made by the Supreme Court in Texas v. Johnson. The controversial case in 1989 that held up the burning the flag as an act of protected free speech. (As it is stated under the First Amendment.)
The American South. An area full of rich history and the home to some of the nation’s largest conflicts throughout history, such as the civil war and the civil rights movement. Southerners have always been proud of their heritage despite its rocky parts and display it for all to see with a 150 year old flag. This is proving to be problematic, though, as the Confederate flag they are all so proud of, is really only 50 years old and has been associated with ideals of white supremacy and racism. Some Southerners and other Americans choose to not believe the truth about the flag, others were never taught the truth. However, it is incredibly important in forming an opinion on the flag, and to whether or not the flag must be removed from state buildings. And the truth is, due to its historical affiliation to racist whites in the South, white supremacy groups, and recent events such as the Charleston Shooting, the Confederate rebel flag should not be flown on state buildings as it is not culturally sensitive to African American people who have been targeted by these people.
I am a Black woman. Right now, in our current day America, I do not feel safe in my own country. I watch the news and see a new report each day about how an unarmed Black person is killed by police. Every day on Twitter I see another hashtag movement as a universal sign of mourning. Another city becomes a war zone of racial violence. Another Black person is killed and my own government is unsympathetic to our pleas for help. There are still state capital buildings that fly the Confederate Flag. A flag that represents the outrage against the abolishment of slavery. A flag that now represents intimidation and fear mongering. It is our utmost duty to ban the Confederate flag because it represents a time where it was justifiable to own people
When America today sees a Confederate Flag being flown or displayed, there is usually a controversy that occurs. People in todays society still believe that it is a symbol of racism and just inappropriate to be flying considering our country’s history. Obviously not much has changed since the 1970’s. People back then believed it was racial bigotry and a symbol of uneducated white trash. To an extent this
Everyone has their opinions about the Confederate Flag and no matter how many polls are done on this issue we need to make a stand and do the right thing. Remove the Confederate Flag and put in a Museum and talk about the Confederate Flag in your history books. Governor Robert Bentley made a decision to remove the Confederate Flag from the Alabama State Capitol. This was a proactive step in my opinion but a great start on trying to take control of the issue before it reaches
I don't understand why we can all just get along and let each other believe what we want to believe. people would rather start drama and be hypocrites they want to be selfish and one sided and only believe what they want to believe. I am going to do an persuasive and informational speech about this topic. these are some of my beliefs towards the banning of the confederate flag. I am going to argue this subject intensively. Ask anyone who has this symbol, and they'll most likely tell you it has something to do with southern pride. But some might become uneasy by this. Many people don't know that there are several different flags. People see the "southern cross the most common of them"as a hate symbol but there are many others. That nobody complains about. It's the same thing as banning the Indiana flag. If we car banning the confederate flag why don't they ban the rainbow flag that symbolizes gays and I'm a Christian and that is against my religion. God always said treat everyone with love and not with hate treat others as you want to be treated. I honestly have nothing against gay people as a whole but they are saying the confederate flag is a hate symbol I am going to fight back. The main reason they are banning it is because black people, gay people aren't the whole problem they are just adding to this mess. Black people ar just as racist as white people are they call white people crackers and we call
Is America more racist now than it was 60 years ago? Of course not, yet America is more polarized than it’s ever been. Even on issues that are mere trifles, Americans cannot seem to agree upon anything. One of these seemingly pointless issues is whether the rectangular Second Confederate Navy Jack and the Battle Flag of Northern Virginia, or as many people call the “confederate flag”, should be banned. It is difficult to discern what exactly set off this movement, the fact of the matter is that the confederate flag has been used for years with no apparent backlash, but has become an issue of controversy. This debate has raised legitimate concern especially in regards to its use amongst federal institutions such as South Carolina flying it over the State House. However, this movement has pushed its way past that into the personal realm. Many have come to the belief that it must be banned on all accounts. Certainly, believing in something enough to fight for it is admirable— something that truly defines what the USA stands for; however, when emotion is used to wrongfully conclude, and in this case, ban a flag without true factual evidence, there becomes a problem. The basis of this argument is that the flag inherently represents racism due to the Southern United States’ history of slavery. This thesis, although noble in motive, neglects the facts of history and logic. The “confederate flag” should not be banned on a personal basis because it would wrongfully and fictitiously
The Confederate Flag is the symbol for the Southern state in the Civil War. It is not just pieces of material. The flag represent families and where they came from. Flags have been a part of history since the beginning of time and the Confederate flag is a large part of the United States history. People need to learn what the flag has represented. The true meaning. Not what they think the flag has represented. Teaching the meaning of the Confederate flag needs to start in the schools with young children. Without knowing the true history and meaning of the Confederate flag the war over the flag may never stop. People cannot change history by removing a flag from a pole, it is history and history will never change. Society can move forward by educating people on the Confederate flag and change the way future generations view this traditional symbol of the South.
The issue of flag desecration has been and continues to be a highly controversial issue; on the one side there are those who believe that the flag is a unique symbol for our nation which should be preserved at all costs, while on the other are those who believe that flag burning is a form of free speech and that any legislation designed to prevent this form of expression is contrary to the ideals of the First Amendment to our Constitution. Shawn Eichman, as well as the majority of the United States Supreme Court, is in the latter of these groups. Many citizens believe that the freedom of speech granted to them in the First Amendment means that they can express themselves in any manner they wish as long as their right of
The problem we are facing today is whether or not the confederate flag is a symbol of hate and racism of just some peoples misunderstanding of the meaning of the flag it’s self. I think meaning of the flag is simple and straightforward ,it represents the Confederate side in the civil war. I do not think the confederate flag should be banned on private or public property for a few reasons .One reason is that the civil war a huge mark on our history that needs to be remembered. Another reason would be that the civil war was not about slavery. The man that Started this big debate Dylann Roof was completely crazy.
