Confederate Monuments In New Orleans

The Nation has gone through quite a few imprinting events in the past few months one being the removal of the confederate monuments then leading to chaos in New Orleans. As all acts need an explanation so did this event, Mayor Landrieu of the city of New Orleans came out and gave out an address to all the citizen as to why these monuments that had been up for more than one hundred years were being exterminated and removed.
New Orleans Landrieu says “is truly a city of many nations, a melting pot, a bubbling cauldron of many cultures” there is no other place like this city that so uniquely portrays the American motto of “out if many we are one” he believes. As unique as that city maybe it has its dark past as well the city Of New Orleans

Alexander Stephens, he says made it evident that the confederacy was about keeping the slavery and promoting white supremacy. President Barack Obama says he mentions “Consider what this artifact tells us about history… on a stone where day after day for years, men and women.. bound and bought and sold and bid like cattle on a stone worn down by the tragedy of over a thousand bare feet.” A piece of stone one side was told the other was unremembered as clear as it was for president Barack back then it was clear for the mayor what his decision was.
All throughout the speech Mayor Landrieu gives many examples and anecdotes that have the reader thinking an evaluation his decision, he shares a personal story when a friend goes up to him and asks him to view the four monuments in the perspective of an African American mother trying to explain to her little girl what these statues mean and why they are held up so high within the city. And gets questioned “can you, do it?” he then adds and questions the audience “Do you think she will feel inspired and hopeful by that story, do these monuments help her see the future with limitless potential? Have you ever thought that if her potential is limited, yours is too?” (2017) simple rhetorical questions we all know the answer to that hit us in the soft spot of our soul how can we be so heartless?
