Are comic book movies the new Westerns? Who knows, but it is hard to deny that comic book movies have gained a massive amount of attention within the past 15 years. Whether it be the nostalgia, action, or even the characters themselves, everyone seems to enjoy comic book movies. Unfortunately, most of the characters are male. Most of the studios with superhero properties have a problem with gender equality, and Marvel Studios’s problem seems to be more obvious. Marvel Studios has one of the biggest superhero movie franchises, with Iron-Man, Captain America, Thor, and Hulk each having at least one movie of their own. Although there are now plans for a movie titled Ant-Man and the Wasp, there is no reason for the Wasp not to have her own movie. The Wasp in the upcoming movie will most likely be the character of Hope Van-Dyne, daughter of Hank Pym, the original Ant-Man, and Janet Van-Dyne, the original Wasp. One of the conflicts throughout this year’s Ant-Man is Hope wanting to put on the Ant-Man suit herself, but her father is afraid she would be hurt or shrink too much, just as her mother had. Hope played a fairly large part in film, but eventually became the love interest to Scott Lang’s Ant-Man, similar to Black Widow becoming Dr. Banner’s love interest in Age of Ultron. The Ant-Man film featured Hope’s intelligence with her relaying the villain’s plans to her father and the new Ant-Man. In the film, Hope even demonstrated that she was fully capable of using her father’s technology to control ants, something her father’s successor was having trouble accomplishing. With Ant-Man, Marvel showed that they are aware that women are have the capacity to be heroes, but in giving the Wasp a movie to share with Ant-Man, they are also showing how unsure they are of a female hero being able to carry her own
