Conflicts in the Team Environment: How to Overcome These Obstacles

Even though people think conflicts will not arise in their team, it is vital to have conflict resolution strategies in place in order to avoid conflict and maintain a strong level of team communication. When becoming part of a team, obstacles are common, and they can come from outside of the group, as well as from within. There are many different steps that team members must go through in order to avoid conflicts getting out of hand. Teams must have a common goal that they are working toward in order to overcome these obstacles. Conflict resolution is “the ability of the team to discuss and resolve differences” (The University of Phoenix, p. 1). “Remember, when only one person’s needs are satisfied in a conflict, it is NOT resolved and will continue.” 10. “Build ‘power with’ NOT ‘power over’ others.” Team members are encouraged to abide by these guidelines in order to build a more productive team. If members are able to overcome trials and tribulations, then they will more than likely become closer, and be able to work better with one another. By creating a more trusting environment, the team is able to truly accomplish great things. During the debating period, Each member of the team “should feel empowered to speak their mind, feel listened to, and feel they are a critical part of the solution” (Conflict Resolution, 2007). If this has been accomplished, and everyone feels that they have been heard, than the team has handled the situation with flying colors. In order to successfully follow the above mentioned techniques, members of the team should practice using their active listening skills. Active listening is when someone not only hears what is being said by the speaker, but also shows concern, responds thoughtfully, and provides helpful feedback. The steps that should be followed in order to be considered a good listener are to “listen with empathy and see the conflict from the other person’s point of view, identify issues clearly and concisely, use “I” statements, remain flexible, and clarify feelings”
