Schools should support individuality only to the point where its not inhibiting learning, because then conformity should be what’s established. A tension between individuality and conformity in schools is schools, for instance. Schools, as shown in Source B, can have an extremely restricting schedule, with spending 6 hours and 45 minutes I’m back-to-back classes. This inflexible schedule, in my opinion due to my own personal experiences, leaves no room for the brain to be creative or even rest, at the least. Schedules can be fitting for students, giving them time to be creative and take a break mentally to leave room for individuality while also supporting conformity as for getting to classes on time. An example of this can be shown in Source …show more content…
The balance between these, makes schedules feel less restricting and makes students want to come to school. In this way, students can pursue their own interests and the school encourages them to socialize within a classroom. Although a mixed, creative schedule is necessary to please students and ease their brains, the schools shouldn’t have such long, strict schedules for them to conform to in general. As said by Gatto in Source A, great people have emerged without strict schooling. Students, in his example, are forced to have “six classes a day, five days a week, nine months a year, for twelve years”. He says that this forced schooling isn’t the only way to be successful or to educate, and I’ve seen that as to be true myself. He provides examples of how schools with strict schedules can use examples of how they need to teach certain basic things to a high level because homeschoolers can do the same without the conformity degree of schools. I, personally, have many cousins whom are homeschooled and have learned those basic fundamentals and more, and they don’t have to go through such pressures. They are deemed as being successful and are very
As a student, I am often troubled by the rigid routines of the school day, despite the fact that I am actually a very habitual person. The constant ringing of bells, lectures, bellwork, classwork, homework, each a daily practice throughout the school year. Although all of these components promote conformity, which will ultimately support the balance of school and societal norms, they also tend to threaten each student’s own unique characteristics. This then poses the question; to what degree should schools encourage conformity versus individuality? Certainly, a level of conformity is required to achieve a balanced society however, the overall structure of the school day and class, including the methods used to teach and mandatory classes,
In today’s society Dieting and Exercise are very important in obtaining good health. Regular exercise has been long associated with fewer visits to the doctor, hospitalization and medication. Stomach cells regulate several functions such as sensation, motility, secretion, absorption, local immune defense and also your food intake. Many physicians today use dieting as an intervention to overcome health disorders and diseases such as crohns disease. Crohns disease is a chronic disorder that is associated with inflammation of the digestive tract. Over half a million Americans men and women have been diagnosed with crohns disease. Crohns disease is the most frequent functional gastrointestinal disorder, with a prevalence of 5% to 11%, and is associated with high cost of health care and reduced quality of life (Ligaarden & Farup 2011). Some environmental factors such as dietary factors and psychological stress can play a huge role on the clinical course of crohns Disease. More than two thirds of subjects with CD relate their symptoms to the intake of food, leading most patients to modify their diets ( Ligaarden & Farup 2011). Psychological stress has played a role in causing
“Group conformity scares the pants off me because it’s so often a prelude to cruelty towards anyone who doesn’t want to-or can’t-join the Big Parade.” The style of text I have chosen to focus on is individuality, as I believe that uniqueness of an individual is essential for freedom. Through analysing the texts Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, Equilibrium by Kurt Wimmer, Blind Faith by Ben Elton, The Machine Stops by E.M. Foster and I Always do what Teddy Says by Harry Harrison. I have noticed that societies are being controlled through the idea of conflicts and religious symbolism and conformity, which are prominent in all the societies. The intent to trigger us of the dystopias that could arise in our world today is prominent. I have also
Smith-Acuna writes, “…systems inherently resist change and seek to maintain a certain predictable order. At the same time, systems are constantly reorganizing and transforming themselves” (p. 67). This statement holds true to my personal view. In general the majority of people like a predictable order and stability, myself include. One of the primary reasons that I rely on predictable order is because I am a mother. As a mother, it is essential to provide a consistent predictable order for my boys. The consistency helps with discipline, bedtime, school routine, and gives my boys general stability in life when they know what to expect. During the school year, a reliable pattern of the school routine schedule is developed. When summer vacation comes, I always feel lost for the first few days.
Another significant advantage for homeschoolers is that they have much more free time than the students who go to school for eight hours a day. Some may say that because of the homeschooler’s short school days they do not receive a sufficient amount of time to keep up with school, but they
The purpose of this literature review paper is to navigate and explore different effects in society towards peer pressure, conformity and rebellion. This study attempts to answer the following research questions: How does peer pressure, conformity, and rebellion affects adolescents in society? The main goal of this review is to have knowledge of the effects of this three concepts such as: peer pressure, conformity and rebellion.
B. Preview – Traditional homeschooling can be problematic to a student’s life skills and overall development. The social learning aspect of school, which is lacking in homeschool, directly transfers into college and the workplace. Most teenagers and kids need to be supervised at every moment or else they will not do their work and, while at home, it is hard to find the motivation to do schoolwork.
Firstly, I will be assessing the benefits of good citizens to the public services in respecting equality.
Schools are so much a part of our society, so the accurate length of school days is extremely important. Public opinions on the length of the school days are different. There are a lot of parents and professors concerned that it is hard for children to go to school early in the morning and stay there the whole day. On the other side, some professors try to force students into a nine hour school day. Not so many years ago, school was a main part of my life, and the school days’ structure and length affected my social life and ability to study. From my own experience and some studies that I have seen, students benefit if school days are long.
As teachers, we are given numerous objectives and standards that fit the school’s curriculum that must be taught. Unfortunately, the content load doesn’t fit the hours that are in a school day. The creators of the course curriculum material must know how a school day goes, since they have indeed gone to school before. It isn’t possible to get through all planned activities set for the teachers to follow. A lot can transpire in a school day that prolongs a lesson or stops it completely. Students don’t always come into the classroom prepared to learn right off top. They need time to socialize with friends for a bit, or just get comfortable in their setting before class time begins. Those two factors alone leads teachers to question what is necessary and what is not?
One way to incorporate all three strategies is establishing school norms based on the principals of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey, 2012. These principals address how teens can handle tough, life-changing decisions they often face. Emotional health is the process to enhance ones’ ability to integrate thinking, feeling, and behaving to achieve important life tasks. Providing adequate instructions time in school curriculums to develop emotional health can give students targeted skills to build a positive mindset. Providing students with a plan for life will result in better daily coping skills. The main goal for students is to become working adults in the work force. The positive behavior skills they learn now
Constitution of India is the supreme law of India. It lays down the framework defining fundamental political principles, establishing the structure, procedures, powers and duties, of the government and spells out the fundamental rights, directive principles and duties of citizens. Passed by the Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949, it came into effect on 26 January 1950.
`One of the biggest aspects of the Calvin College community that poses a threat for disunity is among the different cultural groups. The role of cliques in a school setting is not uncommon to see in grade schools, however, that fact that it continues on in the same manner in college is somewhat surprising. At Calvin, it is easily noticeable that there are groups based on nationality and (or) ethnicities. These groups often times do not allow outsiders into their group. They know the differences that exist between them and outsiders. Calvin prides its self on having international students, then how can this still occur? That fact that this occurs even at a Christian college is troublesome. When there are cliques that separate themselves from other clicks it creates divisions and causes disunity. There are many social psychology aspects that can be used to explain with this occurs. These are: ingroup and outgroup, outgroup homogeneity effect, groupthink, and group polarization. Furthermore, there are differences in the cultures where the international students come from which could make them feel out of place when coming aboard. That is, some cultures are individualistic and some are collectivistic. Furthermore, there role of stereotypes and prejudice play a role in causing disunity.
With issues regarding rule breaking in schools being a common spectacle and scenarios which have often attracted significant attention, the news concerning the students of St. Anne Catholic high school breaking the rules that were put in place to regulate and control prom nights was without a question newsworthy. However, the particular news raises some significant questions too hence the need for a critique. This particular paper therefore provides a critique of the news.
Wake up, get dressed, go to school. Monday through Friday 7:30am-2:30pm. Age 7-18 is where most people figure out who they are and what they want to pursue as a career. But they spend those years being shuffled through the halls from class to class being shown how to do math problems that they don't understand. Even the electives, such as art expect the children to produce the same image somewhat replicating an assembly line. The most devastating thing about the school system is the problems they have identifying where they need to separate learning from allowing the person to gain their own sense of identity. Where the regular school system goes wrong is the steps they take to have the children go through and do the same thing over and over so they can pass a test and move on to the next process. There has to be another way, without an alternative to the public school system we would all be the same despite our differences. I believe that homeschooling or unschooling is a more successful way of getting an education that fits each and every person is some way or another.
