After reading the “Confucius Live Next Door” by T. R. Reid, I became very curious and interest in the eastern culture described by the author. Although the book was published more than 20 years ago, been an Asian myself, Chinese to be specific, I did not know the Japanese culture was deeply influenced by the Confucianism until I read this book. Because I always thought the Confucianism or the “teaching of scholars” is only reflected Chinese social ethic. And surprisingly, I strongly sensing that the Japanese culture takes Confucianism even more solemnly than its original headstream, China. This concept is called Chun-Tzu. In according to Confucius, Chun-Tzu is an ideal Gentleman, person and the highest state of benevolent. Confucius highest realm of human individuals is a potential saint, in fact, it is a never-ending learning sanctification. Chun-Tzu should both benevolence and courtesy. In order to practice benevolence, Chun-Tzu should focus on self-overcoming and self-improvement, in line with social norms. According to Confucius, cultured Chun-Tzu personal qualities are responsible for yourself, not for the praise of others, ready to reflect on negligence, strict self-blame, resolute and enterprising, self-improvement. Chun-Tzu is not the purpose of self-liberation, but it is for the benefits of people, save the world, to establish human relations and moral order. The famous golden rule was also developed under the Chun-Tzu concept “Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself (Reid)”. This is an important principle of Confucius way of treat others. Confucius said means people should be treated as a reference to their behavior towards others. Chun-Tzu should have a broad mind, not to be narrow-minded when dealing with people. Also, we should be magnanimous to forgive others. If we do not follow this rule, then we are not only ruining the relationship with others, it will also make things deadlocked and out of control. The interaction between people really should adhere to this principle which is respect for others, and equality of others reflected.
