After reading the “Confucius Live Next Door” by T. R. Reid, I became very curious and interest in the eastern culture described by the author. Although the book was published more than 20 years ago, been an Asian myself, Chinese to be specific, I did not know the Japanese culture was deeply influenced by the Confucianism until I read this book. Because I always thought the Confucianism or the “teaching of scholars” is only reflected Chinese social ethic. And surprisingly, I strongly sensing that the Japanese culture takes Confucianism even more solemnly than its original headstream, China. This concept is called Chun-Tzu. In according to Confucius, Chun-Tzu is an ideal Gentleman, person and the highest state of benevolent. Confucius highest realm of human individuals is a potential saint, in fact, it is a never-ending learning sanctification. Chun-Tzu should both benevolence and courtesy. In order to practice benevolence, Chun-Tzu should focus on self-overcoming and self-improvement, in line with social norms. According to Confucius, cultured Chun-Tzu personal qualities are responsible for yourself, not for the praise of others, ready to reflect on negligence, strict self-blame, resolute and enterprising, self-improvement. Chun-Tzu is not the purpose of self-liberation, but it is for the benefits of people, save the world, to establish human relations and moral order. The famous golden rule was also developed under the Chun-Tzu concept “Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself (Reid)”. This is an important principle of Confucius way of treat others. Confucius said means people should be treated as a reference to their behavior towards others. Chun-Tzu should have a broad mind, not to be narrow-minded when dealing with people. Also, we should be magnanimous to forgive others. If we do not follow this rule, then we are not only ruining the relationship with others, it will also make things deadlocked and out of control. Confucianism has been a part of Chinese culture for over a thousand years. Many who have studied Confucianism would say that it is not a religion. It is better described as a philosophy or moral code. The philosophy of Confucianism comes mainly from the speeches and writings of Confucius, a great Chinese thinker and educator. He believed that Humanity, Rite, Neutrality, Virtue, Education, and Cultivation were the basis of human behavior. In addition, Confucius felt that this philosophy was the best way for people to behave and interact with others in society.
Well this book report will be one of the hardest one’s for me to write for the book was so boring I literally fell asleep every couple of pages and had to drink a huge amount of caffeine just so I would not be put to sleep. However I learned that if a pick up this book and read I’ll be able to put myself to sleep even if I’m struggling to fall asleep. He is well aware that his defense of Japan's tight society is subject to criticism, and at the end of his book he concedes the widespread corruption underlying so many Confucian societies, the diversity that makes overall judgments tricky and the racial homogeneity that may play a great part in enforcing Confucian harmony. But he sticks to his central thesis, fortified by his obviously pleasant recollections of living in Japan.
Confucianism’s major impacts on the bushido code have come from its ethical teachings, primarily those from the Five Relations. Historians suggest that Confucianism was introduced into Japan via merchants who travelled across the East China Sea from neighbouring Korea and China as early as the 4th century AD. If this view is accepted it would make Confucianism one of the earliest foreign religions introduced into Japan thus playing an imperative role in shaping Japanese ideology.

Confucius also recognizes that filial piety should be expressed naturally. According to Confucius, being filial to our parents is the utmost expression of respect. This is an essential element in obtaining the title of Chun-Tzu, or noble person. However, filial piety is not a one-way street. Parents are also filial to their children and to their parents. Both parent and child have a natural position and responsibility within the family; therefore natural filial piety is reciprocal. It is through recognizing and practicing filial piety in the family that a person will know how to act outside of the family. For in the Confucian tradition, it is realized that filial piety also exists between all beings. This is evident in the Confucian Golden Rule: "Never do to others what you would not like them to do to you” (Book XV). As in Taoist thought, filial piety is something that naturally exists and is reciprocal in nature. To force filial piety into being or to intentionally practice reciprocal filial piety would be going against its true nature. Filial piety must be freely and naturally expressed for it to be truly realized.
In the Analects, the virtue of humanity centers around reverence, generosity, diligence, honesty, and kindness towards others. These were different collections of sayings that Confucius had written to reflect his ideas about different things like politics, family, morality, and many more.
