Congratulations and welcome to the NJIT family. That was the first thing I read when I opened my acceptance letter to NJIT. I skimmed thru the rest of the letter as the shadow of my father grew over my shoulder. “Congrats son. I see the school’s in Newark; that’s like a forty minute drive” my father proclaimed. From that statement, I started to think about Newark. I knew there was a restaurant named Fernandes located in Newark, and the typical media coverage on Newark proclaiming the city to be one of the most dangerous in the country. Beside that, I knew nothing else about the third oldest city in America. Therefore, I saw Newark not as a city with a great history and culture but as a forty minute drive from my house. Also, the reports from Fox News and MSN.com about how bad Newark is played a role in my conclusion as well. Yet, I was not ready to consider Newark a struggling city as I felt I need to do more research to reach my own conclusion. As I obtained a large amount of information about Newark, I decide it was time to learn about the city on a personal level. With that change in mindset, I decided to attend a Willie Cole Exhibit. When I went to the exhibit, it was like opening a new book because I found myself in a whole new world. While the exhibit itself took up as much space as a regular classroom, the amount of art in the room made it feel grander. The exhibit covered the entire room as Cole’s constructions, like his umbrella made of water bottles, hung above our heads, and his paintings covered the bland white walls. I was truly blown away by the art, but I would say what surprised me the most was the amount of interested people that shown up to the exhibit. Before, I did not know Newark had an art community. Yet, I was at an exhibit of a Newark resident with about several dozen individuals coming in and out. It was at the exhibit where I got to see and meet individuals that had a part or interest in Newark’s art community. In fact, I was able to have good talk with Sandy Lizarreduff, an administrator for a private school. I asked questions about not only Willie Cole’s art but about Newark as well. As for what is happening in Newark today, Lizarreduff said it best
