The American population is today appreciative of the fact that mental illness is a present issue in the society. As such, there is a need for proposals that will allow a change in the management of mental health care (Wyman, 2015). In particular, Connecticut was the center of a recent incident in which a troubled lad opened fire on unsuspecting students in Newton. The reaction to the shooting in Newton has elicited growing concerns about the mental health status in Connecticut especially regarding the young people. A primary concern has been the dwindling financial allocations directed towards mental health care. Besides, there has been an existing fear where most parents who have mentally troubled children prefer to seclude them from the society. In this regard, it is imperative that the administration devices a way of ensuring that there is the availability of cheap treatment options for the patients, and an enlightenment program exists to reduce …show more content…
Principally, while it is possible to gather lobby groups and attempt to advocate a particular direction, the final stage requires the support of legislators. The article insinuates that is it is critical to identify the district that the legislators represent (Cthealthpolicy, 2015). The district is significant because the legislators will only serve the interests of the district they represent. For instance, representatives from Newton may be more receptive to the mental health reform proposals due to the incident in Newton. Secondly, a legislator is friendly and appreciative of input in regards to various issues. The idea is that they rely on goodwill for reelection and are therefore open to constructive ideas. Besides, legislators are not completely aware of issues that encompass policymaking; this offers advocates a chance to push agendas and
Riverview Psychiatric Center has lost its certification due to improper treatment of patients. The only definite way for them to regain their certification is to create a new facility for forensic patients. Riverview lost their certification because of wrongful use of stun guns, pepper spray, and handcuffs. They also made mistakes with giving medications, didn't take proper records and didn't report their patients progress. There are people that are afraid that if a new facility for just forensic patients is created, it will be more of a jail-like environment. The patients might be treated more like criminals and prisoners than mentally unsound patients.
Ther Kingsboro Psychiatric Center is the only psychiatric hospital in Brooklyn, which is state-run with 140 beds. At Brooklyn general hospitals, there are 790 psychiatric inpatient beds, which is 40.2 beds per100,000 compared to 41.0 in NYC (NYS DOH, 2014).

In recent times, the responsibility of providing health care services has fallen on the shoulders of the primary health care providers. In turn, this reflects on the treatment preferences of many citizens and the subsequent availability and further the affordability of health care services. Quite some patients now receive health care for mental disorders from their primary health care providers. Therefore, this shows that the mental health afflicted patients are getting the proper treatment and prescription of their disorders from their doctors.
In regards to lobbyists and interest groups influence in the legislative processes, they have come to play a more important role in determining which proposed bills are passed. This is due to a number of factors, the most important being that, due to the increase in the presence of professionalized legislatures, interest groups and lobbyists have begun to play a different role in the process. Rather than relying onto bring issues to their attention and help them create new legislation, professional legislatures are instead are knowledgeable and educated enough on policy and current issues to manage the the process by themselves. Because of this, rather than primary focusing on bringing issues that concern the well-being of citizens to the attention

With mental illness identified as a very probable cause of these shootings, it is critical that the evidently poor and ineffective clinical help for mental disorders be reevaluated. A theoretical explanation for the modern prevalence of mental illness could be the increasingly optional nature of treatment: therapy is a choice, and checking into a facility or institution is
Access to mental health care is not as good as than other forms of medical services. Some Americans have reduced access to mental health care amenities because they are living in a countryside setting. Others cannot get to treatment for the reason of shortage of transportation or vast work and household tasks. In some areas, when a
“Nearly 5 million children in the U.S. have some type of mental illness” (Goldberg). It is agreeable that there are many young children that deal with mental illness every day. Schools should be concerned for every student’s well being. Moreover, mental health is a part of a person’s overall “well being.” Therefore, schools need to make the mental health of students a stronger focus and implement plans to keep students mentally well and educated. To help create a positive, mental health aware environment where students feel open to seek help, high school students should be educated on how to be mentally healthy, be given a safe place to seek help, and be encouraged to monitor and maintain their mental health. Mental illness and mental health care need to be a more eminent priority in our society, starting with high schools.
In today’s society there is a greater awareness of mental illnesses. With this greater awareness one might assume that there would be a substantial increase in government involvement or funding in the area of mental illness treatment. Unfortunately this isn’t the case in the U.S. today. There are hundreds of thousands of people with mental illness that go untreated. These potential patients go untreated for many reasons. These reasons are discussed in the Time article “Mental Health Reform: What Would it Really Take.
The stigmas surrounding mental health create a barrier not only for the treatment of the parents suffering from these disorders but also for their children. For parents, a staggering 2/3 of the population suffering from mental illnesses, admitting that they cannot care for themselves and their children can be extremely difficult and thus their children suffer. It is said that 30-50 percent of children with mentally ill parents will have a psychiatric diagnosis in comparison to 20 percent of the general population. Many times, even when parents do choose treatment information about their children is rarely
It has been reported that the number of people with mental disorder is increasing in our communities at an alarming rate. Environmental and social changes are among the most mentioned causes of the accelerating rate of mental illness in society (Häfner, 1985). Despite the prevalence, about one fifth of the adult population will battle with mental illness every year ("Facts and figures about mental illness," 2014) and the acknowledgement of authorities mental illness is still given less attention then is needed to treat the problem successfully. Health bodies need to be putting more resources into this area as
The negative stigma of mental health has lightened slightly over the years, however, it has not rescinded entirely. People still have an unmanageable time admitting that they may have a mental disorder and that they require assistance. Human beings struggle with these hindrances openly and also hidden on a daily basis. Therefore, our civilization needs to remove the shame associated with the treatment of mental disorders and work on devising a progressive suitable mental healthcare plan in order to ensure that many live a healthy, happy, and prosperous
There are many mental health facilities around the state and the country, being able to attend and observed in one was very difficult because of confidentially purposes. Many agencies I visited such as Catholic Charities, St. Mary Hospital behavioral health services, covenant house had turned me down not allowing me to have that exposure and visit in their organization. The agencies policies were strict, they had mentioned they will have to do a series of background checks and had to be enroll in their organization as an intern to be able to have access in their facility. I understood these precautions were very important for the confidentially of patients and the facility. As I was struggling to find some access to a mental health
Mental Health has been recognized, as the well-being at which individuals are able to cope with everyday stresses, and work productively while contributing back to their community. Mental Health America began in the early 1900’s by Clifford W. Beers, a former psychiatric patient who experienced mental/physical abuse during his stay in public and private institutions. It wasn’t until short after a reform group emerged, to stand against the abuse and ill-treatment at these institutions. In this paper, I will be discussing the history/background of Mental Health Services, and how quality, access, cost or other factors have changed (or how they haven’t). I also will be discussing the populations that benefit from this type of service and the significant issues, and or problems within the area that impact specific populations. Lastly, I will interpret national policy, legislation, attitudes, political climate, and how they impact or relate to the problems discussed, then I will address two current issues discussed along with clarifying each discussion.
