Bullying has been going on for about 200 years. The highest percentage of young people taking their own lives are between 14 and 18. Over 30,000 Americans take their own life each year, or about 85 each day. The most influential factor in determining if an individual might consider taking their own life is bullying as evidence by research, events, and experience.
What does research say about the connection between bullying and suicide? Bullying and suicide have a strong connection because being bullied in any way is an important risk factor that appears to increase the risk of suicide. When someone is being bullied and they think about committing suicide they have a negative thought in their head. In according to the CDC.Gov, “Young people who are involved in bullying increases the chances that a young person will engage in suicide-related behaviors.” Once victims are bullied they think there is no sense in living so they may take it upon themselves. Had they never experienced harassment, they may not have considered suicide at all, which proves the connection.

Events also show bullying causes suicide because on May 4, 1877 William Arthur Gibbs committed suicide after being beaten and bullied. He committed suicide at the age of 12. Maybe William was getting bullied and beaten so bad and picked on that he decided to take his own life. On January 14, 2013 Jadin Bell hanged himself from a play structure. He was bullied on the internet and in person for his alternative lifestyle. He didn't die from strangulation and was later rushed to the emergency room. Jadin was on life support for 20 days and on February 3, 2013 he was taken off of life support. Just because someone is part of the LGBT community, they shouldn't have to be judged and picked on. Still after 200 years, bullying still going, it’s out of hand, and is leading to more
According to Dr. Rick Nauert, an associate professor for Rocky Mountain University, self-harm behaviors usually stem from an overall desire to relieve things such as stiffness or stress, and in the most dangerous of cases may even represent a form of suicidal intent in the individual. (Nauert, “Being Bullied Increases Likelihood of Self-Harm”). Through an extensive amount of research it can be proven that bullying does in fact result in self-harm. For example, in Carter Hay and Ryan Meldrum’s journal entry, “Bullying Victimization and Adolescent Self-Harm: Testing Hypotheses from General Strain Theory,” it is suggested that if we were to draw from, “Agnew’s 1992 social psychological strain theory of deviance, this study considers this issue by testing three hypotheses about the effects of traditional and cyber bullying victimization on deliberate self-harm and suicidal ideation. The data come from a school-based survey of adolescents in a rural county of a southeastern state (n = 426); 50% of subjects are female, their mean age was 15 years, and non-Hispanic whites represent 66% of the sample.”(Hay, Meldrum, 446). This type of research, as well as the various statistics that go along with it prove that bullying, whether it be
Many bullying scenarios have resulted in self harm or even suicide. Just this past June, a girl in Tampa, Florida, committed suicide because of a friend taking a naked picture of her without her permission and shared it on social media. A reporter from Channel 8 News, quotes a psychiatrist, Dr. Walter Afield: “Teenagers are very nasty to each other because they’re so nervous and so forth. When they bully, well you can yell, you can shout, you can shoot back but when it comes on the internet so quickly and so instantly and all around. It gets very aggressive.” 15-year-old was found dead by her aunt from a gunshot in her
LGBT youth are most commonly targeted by bullying because society does not fully understand what these kids are going through in life. One of the main reasons for this is due to something that may set themselves apart from the norm and that includes sexual orientation. Gay and lesbian teens are two to three times as more likely to commit suicide than any other youths. Those who are rejected by their family are up to nine times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. About 30 percent of all completed suicide have all been related to bullying.
In the article Big Bad Bully by Hara Estroff Marano she discusses the main components of behavior that make up a bully, who can be a bully and why people choose to bully others. In the beginning of the article she focuses on suicide victims who could no longer take the mental, physical and emotional abuse of bullying. Marano (2017), “Months later, in Cherokee County, Georgia, 15-year-old Brian Head grew tired of the same teasing and deeds. The denouement was only slightly more remarkable. He shot himself to death—in front of his classmates. He walked to the front of the classroom and pulled the trigger.” The same teasing and deeds Marano is speaking of is being tripped in the hall, various name calling and being physically bullied. The article goes into depth of how the Western society treats bullying. We are prone to often dismiss bullying as kids being kids and, teachers are in denial that any such behavior exist in their class. However, the sad truth is that more times than not there is always a classroom bully. Because we often overlook the severity of bullying choosing to close our eyes we get a harsh reality when someone commits suicide. It forces us to acknowledge the hard truth with open eyes that we have chosen to close for too long.
With bullying, boys are highly to be attacked by a bully with physical abuse and girls are likely to be bullied indirectly. Statistics show that 15 to 25 children commit suicide. “Once I got teased, I could see where the anger came from and what can make someone want to kill,” said Stefan Barone, a fourteen year old. (ABC News) The anger and depression is overwhelming and hard to control. There is no doubt that bullying cause’s suicide, and those bullied often commit acts of violence against others.
A lot of teens commit suicide due to bullying because it makes them feel unwanted and lonely. When everyone is picking on them they feel like they have no friends, and no one to turn to or talk to. Also kids and high school tend not think long term and don’t look at the bigger picture. An example of this in Hamlet is when Ophelia drowns herself in the river because she thinks Hamlet doesn’t want her and that he doesn’t love her. Another example although its not in hamlet a transgender teen in Texas committed suicide because she was bullied every day at school and hated going to school as a result of that. Eventually she committed suicide because it had gotten so bad. Also, now with social media being as popular as it is almost everyone has a twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. so that could allow people to harass them on there or commit
Coming to conclusion bullying is a factor that leads to committing suicide but there is plenty of more reasons why people commit suicide, bullying is the one out of 20 reasons why people commit suicide . We cannot prevent suicide by simply preventing bullying, and we should not simply prevent bullying for fear of suicide. Though very apparent that the young girl was targeted through cellphone-based social media, it has also been reported she was hospitalized for mental health and switched schools. Hope fully I got your attention and thought of why bullying is not the only reason why people commit suicide either way we should prevent both to make others feel
There is a clear connection with bullying, and cyberbullying and teenage suicide. Although bullying and or cyberbullying might not be the only reason why a kid would take their life, it is certainly a major factor that is raising many questions. In the case of. Rosalie Avila, she left a note saying because of her being bullied. In an analysis of 47 studies in bullying and suicide done by, PBS News Hour, they discovered that “youth involved in bullying in any capacity-both bullies and victims of bullying-were more likely to think about and attempt suicide than youth who were not involved in bullying,

First, bullying is seldom the only factor in a teenagers suicide (colono,2011).Mostly all teenagers who are getting bullied usually kill them selves because they cant take what people are saying and doing to them. There is a strong link between bullying and suicide. Bully victims are between 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims, according to studies by Yale University (bullystatics.org)
Furthermore, bullies are the real cause of suicide. According to the Amanda Todd story she says a target will think about giving up on life never think that those are the worst thing you could say. Bullies will have a trauma from thinking about why they did that or how could they have prevented this. Stuff like that can mess a kid up. They already have been through enough. So just don’t bully and you will be ok.
But both articles show that bullying alone does not result in direct suicide, there are some other factors which contribute a lot toward the final step of suicide. These factors include depressions, problems faced by student at home, trauma history of students. Both of these articles also provide some suggestions regarding the solution of this issue (prevention of bullying). Both articles describes that
Personally, I think that bullying alone is not the only case why people commit suicide bullying is very common. Many people think that bullying is the main reason why people commit suicide. However, they can also be very depressed this is without a question one of the main reasons why people commit suicide. Another reason could be that there not receiving the help they need there crying out but people are not listening. Many people go through mental illness, which people think that instead of taking the treatment to get better. Now because of that these people might think there to perfect to not take the treatment needed. Bullying is a case of why people commit suicide but is not the only
