Conquering Dehydration There are numerous factors that lead to an athlete’s accomplishments and the main factor an athlete often forgets is hydration. It does not matter if you spend hours on end training for your event if you are not properly hydrated. Hydration is an outstanding factor, in how an athlete will perform. Dehydration can also lead to blood clots, seizures, and other complications. Are you dehydrated? Your body gives you multiple signs that you are dehydrated. One of the signs that you are dehydrated is that you are experiencing bad breath. This seems weird, but allow us to explain. If you are experiencing dehydration, your saliva levels go down. Dark yellow urine is usually the first sign of dehydration. When you are not consuming enough water, your kidneys begin to conserve water which makes the urine more concentrated with waste products which make your urine darker. In an interview with Kevin Mauldin, a highly respected and award winning athletic trainer, he stated. “Hydration in athletes is the most important thing an athlete can do before a game. Hydration will keep the player cool and energized so that he can compete. If a player doesn’t hydrate enough, the risk of heat related symptoms become very likely”

It is evident that healthy adults running a marathon that replaces with only free water will run into pathophysiology challenges that will affect performance. Adequate fluid intake is crucial for prolonged, strenuous exercises to maintain adequate hydration, thermoregulation, maintain plasma volume and avoid dehydration (Duvillard et al, 2004). Although athletes are prone to hydrate as much as they can during extensive marathons, research shows that fluid replacement with only free water or even hypotonic beverages can be detrimental.
You can become dehydrated without even realizing anything is wrong. Many body functions use water, using up what is already inside your body. Drink water often and rest frequently, especially in hot weather.

Depending on age, sex and muscle to fat ratio will affect the rate any given individual will burn calories. I personally have a really high meetabolizem and can eat a lot before seeing changes to my weight. However if I were to become dehydrated the rate of burning calories will slow down making me sluggish. When the body has plenty of water the rate calories are burned stays accelerated ready to fuel the body. In reality staying hydrated will help you loose wait because even at rest your body is using energy and if you are hydrated it will use more energy meaning more calories and cutting
An example of when a sports person becomes dehydrated would be a running race. Runners need to run at their highest level this means that they are using up their energy and becoming dehydrated. This means that you will become fatigued and lack in strength while performing. This can make you slow down or sometimes stop because you can’t last that long. This effects your performance in the race and can cause you to lose the race.

Even the lowest level of dehydration can have major effects on athletic performance; a loss of just two percent body loss can lead to a reduction in performance by ten to twenty percent (6). Doctors recommend 8 glasses a day. You many not feel like you need that much but you do you lose water every way including waste, breathing, sweat and other ways. Water is never stored so every day you must replenish what you have lost. There are many ways you can get water including the food you eat, you don't just have to drink water. Cetian things will affect how much water you need including caffeine and salty foods. Too much water can make you feel sick and have to go to the bathroom a lot but if you do not get enough water then you can have major issues that may result in death. Although you may lose weight when you are dehydrated it is just water weight you are no healthier.
