Conroy's Brief Summary

I this essay I will discuss what the Macpherson report is and how it came about. Furthermore, I will state the number of recommendations that were put forward by the Macpherson report and how well they were implemented. Lastly I will discuss the number of changes that have taken place in the police service due to this report and whether or not the metropolitan police have tackled the culture of racism that was prevalent when the report came out.

In the past Tuesday in class, we read Assembling California by John McPhee. In reading the first few pages of the book, I was amazed about how much gold was present in California at the start of the gold rush. I can’t even imagine gold being so prevalent that people were digging it out of rocks with knives. Eventually, as more people came for the gold and to ‘strike it rich,’ they brought other ways of harvesting the gold out of California, such as panning and gunpowder. This search for gold, and any raw material at that made me realize how extensive the desire for raw materials really is. I realized that people don’t care about the repercussions of their actions, provided that the immediate result of their actions is beneficial to themselves.

There is a common theme in both “Cons” by Jess Walter and “Greasy Lake” by T. Coraghessan Boyle and that is death. In both stories, someone dies and there is guilt carried with them. In “Cons”, One man kills a young couple who his walking on the sidewalk. In the story “Greasty Lake”, the teenage boy sees a dead body floating in the lake and doesn’t tell anyone. They both now must go through life with this negative memory.

McElvaine book reveals a collection of letters of the forgotten men, women, and children who suffered through the Great Depression. McElvaine puts the reader in direct contact with Depression victims, showing a feeling of what it was like to live through this dilemma. The writers of the letters came from different kinds of people:middle-class people, blacks, rural residents, the elderly, and children. By looking at the Great Depression from the perspectives of its victims of diverse backgrounds and McElvaine gives the reader a better understanding of their struggles on a more personal level.

People who have experienced traumatic events often exhibit symptoms of mental damaged, long after the catalyst is removed.Therefore, many of the victims find solace in differing coping mechanisms. Humans are meant to empathize with one another, it is in the nature of people and it inherent to the human psyche. Though, people attempt to cover up their empathy and show disinterest towards others, the kind nature to feel bad for those lesser than ourselves tends to shine though. In his article, “The Blessings of Slavery,” George Fitzhugh brings about an argument against the abolitionist movement. In his writings, he speculates on the feelings of a black man under slavery, something that he will never feel or understand without personally going through it.He asserts that slavery is truly good for both white and black men. Along with the idea that black men are inherently lazier, he claims that racism is actually placed on the backs of the white man.
