Consequences In The Giver

The book “The Giver” was written by Lois Lowry in 1993. The book is about a community where there is no disease or penury, but you get little individual choice. The community is basically the perfect world, no war, drama, etc. In the excerpt from StudySync, Jonas expresses his concerns about his soon to be assigned career path to his parents.

Imagine a world with no feelings, no color, no choice; a world where individuality and freedom are exchanged for security and sameness.      This book is about a boy names Jonas. Jonas lives in a futuristic society where there is no pain, fear, war, and hatred. There is also no prejudice, since everyone looks and acts basically the same, there is very little competition. They have also eliminated choice.

Imagine living in world where there are no feelings, color, or pain, and everyone is the same besides you. Jonas realized he was living in a world without color, pain, or feelings. Without color, pain, and feeling Jonas wasn’t able to express true happiness, and he therefore left the community. “Lois Lowry’s childhood escapades inspired her books,”(Dellinger). Also Lois loved photography and it resulted in the cover of The Giver, which is a photo of a blind painter. This connects to the book because no one can see in color besides the giver and the receiver, which is Jonas. Lois Lowry uses the literary elements foreshadowing, symbolism, and imagery to express the theme that one cannot have happiness without pain, in the book The Giver.

Imagine having everything you wished for. You would live in a perfect world. But every world has imperfections and you come across to realizing...a perfect world doesn’t exist. Within time, you come from an illusion to reality. You choose your journey and it starts here. The community is a separate environment from the world and has many rules to live by. The rules can vary to be severe consequences. It includes sameness, no memories, and family unit regulations. The kids end their childhood at the age of 12 by receiving their life assignment. The main character, Jonas is chosen to be the receiver of memory. He is reliable to hold everyone's feelings, hopes, and devotions. In The Giver the author Lois Lowry uses the theme of change to reveal that growing up in “the community” is a non-stressful and organized environment but Jonas finds the real world a whole different place when he receives memories about strong feelings and hardships, intellects the word “love”, and how important it is to be an individual.

The Giver by Lois Lowry is about a twelve year old boy, Jonas, living in a utopian society. This story follows Jonas on his way to find out the truth about his Community, and what secrets lie in the past. The society where Jonas lives knows nothing of the real world, and only know of their perfect reality. In the novel The Giver, the most significant theme is control because in the society there is no freedom of knowledge, freedom of love, or freedom to do what they please, which amounts to uttermost control.

In The Giver they have no memories of anything that has pain even involved which meant that the community had to get rid of some joyful things also. In her acceptance speech of the medal she stated things in her life that influenced her book, The Giver. Many of the events in Lois Lowry’s life had really influenced many of the big events in The Giver.

They must be felt with the heart.” Similarly, in The Giver, a dystopian novel written by Lois Lowry, Jonas, a twelve year old boy lives in a “perfect” community. Through the memories Jonas receives of the past from the Giver, he learns that feelings must be felt with the heart, and that they cannot be touched or seen. Jonas’ understanding of feelings develops dramatically after he receives memories from the Giver. Throughout the novel, Jonas learns the true meaning and importance of feelings and compassion, and he evolves from being shallow boy to being compassionate and empathetic young man.

The Giver strives to be a utopian society but the still can’t be perfect. The Giver is a book with the main character being Jonas, Jonas has no last name; however, no one else had the last name in their society. The Giver is a Dystopian because they get their memories erased, they are all equal, and they get assigned jobs when they are 12.

Through our society we are all raised up to be independent and unique individuals such as being ourselves and expressing who each of us are to the world. However, in the book The Giver by Lois Lowry, everyone is raised to count on one another and everyone must look and act the same. Our society differs from Jonas’s in many ways, such as the family units, birthdays, and the way we each learn about our past.

One person is isolated from their town to find the New World, a dimension that has a different government. When searching for the New World, you could find new unpredictable problems and surprises, like in “The Giver”. In “The Giver”, from page 170 to 178, Jonas and Gabriel was in situations, that they both experienced new problems, like rain, hunger, and snow, that slowed them down along the way. Lois Lowry’s novel, The Giver, offers a thought provoking, well written story, because it changes the perspective of anyone who dares to read it to. Lowry places her novel, at some point in the future when mankind has gone away with changes and choices in life. She forces readers appreciate, or at least re-think the world they live in today. Her novel presents a fully human created environment where people have successfully blocked out conflict, grief, and individuality. Each person follows the same routine every day. Failure comply with standards, to be different, means death. Jonas, the main character, finds himself trapped in this world.

The giver is a fictional novel authorised by Louis Lowry dedicated to informing readers about the devastating impact of extreme conformity on a community. As we progress throughout the book we start to realise and learn all these new things about the giver's community, such as creating and trying to maintain a perfect community, that comes beyond our abilities, while the givers society is having a huge impact on the individuality and individual choices on the members of the community. We learn that the inhabitants of the society had a hard time handling all the different memories, in a sudden event. All hints and evidence to these statements above are hidden and presented throughout the book.

In the novel, The Giver ,the reader learns that life is not perfect. The reader will also learn that one will not always do well in an activity. Lois Lowry makes that very clear in the novel. Jonas, the main character, realizes that his society is not perfect and that life has highs as well as lows. One’s society should never try to achieve to be perfect, although it would make the world feel better, it is not possible.
