Standardized Testing and Overall Student Performance In the United States, standardized tests have been given to students since the mid-1800s. Currently, students take standardized tests to measure their academic performance, and currently there is a discussion on whether they are an accurate representation of a student’s overall performance in school. Standardized tests should not affect a student’s overall performance in school to a significant extent because standardized testing focuses on cognitive factors dealing with comprehension and understanding of material taught in class while dismissing other critical factors in determining a student’s overall success in school. One of the major drawbacks of standardized testing is the limit it puts on student learning. A research found that GED recipients “lack important qualities such as curiosity, conscientiousness, perseverance, and sociability”, showing that standardized tests restrict curiosity and ignore more important factors. (NCTE) The tests do not consider students curiosity and other factors and instead only measures the student’s cognitive abilities. Furthermore, standardized tests cannot measure “creativity, critical thinking, resilience, motivation, persistence, curiosity, and endurance”, the qualities needed in school or in a workplace.
