By attending ABRCMS I hope to implement constructive critiques and suggestions received by others into future research projects. Furthermore, I intend to strategically incorporate these suggestions and the knowledge obtained from the event into my future research plan as an IRTA applicant. Not only do I hope to harvest knowledge, but I intend to further assist other students with constructive critiques and tips as it fits to their research topics. As an ABRCMS participant I intend to share the critical aspects and contributions that my research has to the field of STEM. I hope by understanding my research others will understand the basic impacts of public health issues such as cigarette smoke on the human body. Having this common knowledge
The first research article that I chose to discuss is “The natural history of cigarette smoking from adolescence to adulthood in a Midwestern community sample: Multiple trajectories and their psychosocial correlates.” This research extended from 1980-1983. It took place in a county school system in the Midwest. The group for study consisted of 6-12th graders and included those who graduated from the years 1980-1989. The total student’s who were questioned and assessed at least one time was 8,556. A follow up assessment was performed in 1987 at that time 73% of the participants were reevaluated; they were between the ages of 15 and 25. In 1993 another follow up was done; again 73% were reevaluated
Hovell and co works (2000) conducted studies with the objective to study efficiency of counselling for smoking mothers in reducing young children’s exposure to environmental tobacco smoke and published it as an article Effect of counselling mothers on their children’s exposure to environmental tobacco smoke: randomised controlled trial’. There is little irrelevance in study and title of article. As study was conducted on smoking mothers but title mentioned mothers in general means mothers including smoker and non-smoker. Title should include smoking mothers not only mothers. Trial was conducted in randomised control trial with the hypothesis that counselling would decrease children’s exposure, decrease mother smoking and increase rates of stopping smoking. Randomised controlled trial is considered as the most rigorous method of determining efficiency and relationship between an intervention and outcome. Intervention may be preventative or curative. The first RCT in medicine was conducted by Sir A. Bradford Hill, an epidemiologist working with England's Medical Research Council to tested effectiveness of streptomycin in treating tuberculosis which was published in the British Medical Journal in 1948. Randomization safeguards known and unknown characteristics that could interfere outcome of interest and are evenly distributed across conditions. Selection of research design as randomised control design is the best according to requirement
Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is a fairly common complication in hospitalized patients. Nosocomial infection prevention and patient safety promotion has been issued and many researches have been conducted to improve patient’s quality of life. In this article, Saint et al. (2005) hypothesize that using a paper-based urinary catheter reminder can reduce the incidence of urinary catheterization, and consequently this will enhance the patients’ safety.
An important aspect involved in critical appraisal of a study involves identifying and evaluating the study framework. This allows the reader to determine whether it is appropriate to apply the study findings to nursing practice. The author of this study identified the specific perspective from which the study was developed. More specifically, the author sought to provide insight into the phenomenon of lay presence during adult CPR specifically from the perspective of ambulance staff and
By going through the process of reviewing the literature I was educated on how scientist practitioners apply research to the field of practice. Once armed with the research I was able to implement interventions that I believed to work and used the research to show our accrediting agency so that I was able to use my own interventions in my
The relatable health problem is tobacco use. Tobacco can be used in many ways, but most commonly it is smoked or chewed. I chose this health topic because it is a concerned of mine on how many young adults use tobacco. According to healthy people 2020, “10.9 percent of young adults aged 18 to 25 years who had not previously used tobacco products in their lifetime first used tobacco products in the past 12 months in 2008” This shows that young adults are trying and experimenting at a young age. I will be doing
A bitter and blunt criticism reflects one's concerns, and frustration; it proves not disloyalty or enmity since that omits the natural reaction, on unjust attitudes. A disloyal adopts the secret ways, not the open roots.
The purpose of this report is to conduct a critical appraisal of a published article.
“Now We Can Begin” an essay by Crystal Eastman is a very powerful essay. Eastman makes the point know in her essay that an honest and true feminist no matter where she stands in the movement she will see to the woman’s fight with strength and courage and how it matters in the future and as well as its difference in its approach for the workers fight for industrial freedom. Eastman state “In fighting for the right to vote most women have tried to be either non-committal or thoroughly respectable on every other subject. Now they can say what they are really after; and what they are after, in common with all the rest of the struggling world, is freedom”
During week one, my initial definition of learning was listening to an instruction, studying and then rehearsing that information in my mind, or categorizing it in a way so I could remember most of what was taught in the course. The class has opened a new dimension for me in the learning process; from understanding how I process information to deciphering which learning processes I use in intentional learning or metacognition. Understanding my learning patterns form dynamic learning relationship is a key element to my view of how and why I process the learning experience, even relating it to every day life.
At first, I told myself the reason I did not wish to attend was the length of the drive to Memphis, where the conference will be held. I only recently incurred my stage of contemplation, realizing I may need to make a change (King, 2016). It occurred to me that I have been hesitant to attend the Tobacco Science Research Conference because
Dr. David L. Katz, A clinical professor of public health, and director of the prevention research center at Yale University School of Medicine expresses his opinion on public smoking in the following passage.
Goal: I want to persuade my audience that smoking is a health risk to all of society and that smokers should be encouraged to quit.
Smoking, as one knows it, has become a stress-reliever worldwide. One will find a smoker pulling out a cigarette and lighting it up around every corner. Smoking has especially become a growing problem in college campuses. When a college student enters the college campus, they do not only enter a new campus, a new life is also entered. In this new experience, one will find themselves exploring new things. The power of the eye is remarkable in today’s society. When someone has a friend that is doing something, the one looking will eventually want to try as well. This can raise many red flags that can be avoided, simply by banning smoking on all college campuses. Smoking on college campuses should be banned because of nicotine’s negative effect on student’s personalities, academics, and overall health.
Ever since the University launched its ‘Clean Air Policy’ in January, campus officials have seen positive results from the community. According to an article written by Kendra Clark in follow-up to the recent change, she states that the change has positively affected the community. In the article Vice President of Student Affairs, Jill Carr, talks about it being a “community Approach” and that it can only reach its full potential if students are willing to ‘politely enforce’ it outside of the designated smoking zones that have been
