The first problem that I wonder about is how Rayne and Ethan will be together. Some reasons of why I wonder that are. Ethan are always there for each other and they have been there for each other throughout a lot of things that I.When Rayne ran away back to london Ethan came all the way from Morton’s keep to London just to get her but she still didn't do anything about it or say anything about it. Ethan helped her get a place to live at because when she left another girl took her room. Ethan was always there for her when she was sad because even though they did not show their affection for eachother they still loved each other a lot. The second example is that they both had really good moments together and some examples of that would be. When Ethan came to Rayne’s house and they had a really good vibe near each other. She needs to learn how to kind of appreciate and see the fact that he’s always there for her and that he cares about her a lot. The third example would be i wish i fthe character Rayne could just figure out all the problems that are happening to her she is a really good girl but she was just really confused. I think that Rayne just has to talk to him about everything and figure out where they are in there “Relationship” right
Zeena appears to use her illness as a way to manipulate others to do things. Ethan usually does things to please Zeena. He is taking care of her and feels as if he cannot run off and abandon her. Zeena is controlling over Ethan and wants him to do whatever she pleases. She went away to see another doctor to get a second opinion on her illness and used Ethan’s money to pay for the treatment that she was prescribed even though she knew she wouldn’t be able to do the treatment. As the relationship between Ethan and Zeena becomes worse, Zeena is able to sense the relationship between Ethan and Zeena and becomes
When the author, Karen Vyverberg, refers to geocentric and anthropocentric she means to understand and look at things in perspective of the earth which has been around for billions of years rather than having the perspective of a human who's only been around for a few hundred thousand years. We see the earth and can better understand our impact and how the earth changes when looking at things from a larger scale. This ability is incredibly beneficial as we can compare the earth from before and after mankind to see how we've affected the our planet. We can connect are actions to problems such as climate change and sea-level rising to our activity as humans. We see increase consumption of fossil fuels which in turn causes more pollutants to be released
¨There was a law against luke. Not him personally everyone like him, kids who were born after their parents already had two babies (pg 6)¨. Would you like a law against you? Among the hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix clearly shows that dictatorship is horrible. In this novel Luke is not allowed to leave the house or be seen. Luke leaves the house in cover and meets a girl the same as him she can't go anywhere so she tries to convince luke to rebel to be like regular people with her but he is to nervous. Luke shows the character traits of brave, jealousy and adventurous as he hides in the shadows.
Zeena's control over the relationship made matters worse. Ethan couldn't do the things that he wanted to do because of Zeena's illness. Ethan and Zeena's relationship was so bad that it affected other people. In chapter 6, Ethan wants his farm hand, Jotham Powell, to stay for dinner for his "neutralising presence at the supper table" (Wharton 92). However, Jotham sensed that there would be tension between Zeena and Ethan and told Ethan that he would "go along back" (Wharton 92). Zeena and Mattie's relationship did not fare any better. Zeena never approved of how Mattie took care of the house, mainly because she did not know that Ethan was doing most of the work around the house. Zeena did not like Mattie because she does not do an adequate job of cleaning the house. Even though Zeena never communicated these feelings out loud, her "fault-finding was of the silent kind"(Wharton 53). Zeena was also "doubtful of the girl's efficiency" in cleaning the house (Wharton 53). Zeena also does not approve of Mattie because Ethan seems to give Mattie more attention than her. Ethan and Mattie's relationship was the most positive relationship in Ethan Frome because they were in love with each other, but their love for each other
Isolation can be the determining factor in changing one’s mindset. In Ethan Frome, Ethan faces many disappointments throughout the novel. In the novel, Ethan is an orphan since both parents have passed. His wife Zeena who is also his cousin has become the dominant one in the relationship taking over full control. While living in Starkfield, Zeena has suddenly become “sick” and is forced to bring in her cousin Mattie for help around the house. Zeena is depicted as a bitter prematurely old woman who is always “sick” while Mattie is the picture of health as well as the sweetest woman alive. When Mattie comes into the picture, she becomes the speck of happiness in which Ethan longs for but Zeena keeps taking away. This brings up a theme of failure throughout the novel.
Ethan has such a moral dilemma because Zeena and Mattie are so incredibly different. He struggles with which personality and character traits he likes better. Zeena has been by Ethan's side since his mother was ill and he respects her
In this journal I evaluate why lily decided to leave, question why T-ray is so abusive to Lily and predict where lily where go next. What I have learned from this book is that you don’t need to keep your problems a secret, just tell someone and they will help
So, it can be seen that Zeena and Mattie do have common feelings for Ethan Frome. She probably has resentment and dislike for Ethan From and even herself since it was her idea to crash the sleigh into the oak tree. Also, since her youthfulness was cut short because of an accident and there was no everlasting love that followed it.
Ethan meets Zeena when she serves as a nurse to his dying mother. Though he does not know her very well, Ethan decides to propose to her, out of the fear of loneliness and desperation, caused by the effects of an undesired life in Starkfield. At first, Zeena and Ethan seem happy, but eventually, Zeena develops into a harsh woman. Ethan does nothing but complain about her. She does not want to move to the city, since she has no hope of being the center-of-attention there. So, Ethan has no choice, but to stay in Starkfield and make a living off of the mostly fruitless farm. In addidtion, whenever Ethan is around Mattie, the setting (weather) is “clear as a crystal.”(Wharton 49). Whenever he is around Zeena, it is nasty and stormy.
2. Begin by listing your character’s experiences. If you have many, list just the four most
Black Widows bare similarities to the unnecessary evil in our world. Showing excessive violent tendencies, these creatures represent a broader inspection of our society. Through many examples of literary devices in Gordon Grice’s essay “Caught in the Widow’s Web”, black widow spiders are compared to these evil tendencies in our world..
Mattie and Ethan never follow their love due to Ethan's morals and the respect he has for his marriage to Zeena. He wants Zeena to be well and he takes care of her when she is ill. Frome’s feelings for Mattie never oscillate and he wants to be with this woman who is not his wife. Even though Ethan only had one night with Mattie alone, he cannot help but think of what he has done as he sits in the kitchen. Mattie presents minority, beauty, and good health- all of which Zeena does not possess. It seems he favors the more hip, young, and beautiful women than dull, boring, and unattractive women.
T. Ray had not stopped at tearing her down physically, for he had the strong desire to hack away at what is left of her mental state. By painting such a scarring image of Deborah next to the one Lily made with optimism and fondness, T. Ray’s mirage overshadowed Lily’s impression. This causes her to leave him and start a new chapter in her life. T. Ray’s bestial actions were crucial reasons that influenced Lily’s decision to leave her father and begin her pathway through the perplexing road of her mother’s life.
Frome’s suffering brought about by forces beyond his control. Included in these forces are the weather and time of year, leaving for college and having to come back, and falling in love. The winter weather influnces Ethan to marry Zeena.Due to the seasonal weather, Ethan makes a poor choice in marrying Zeena. “After the funeral, when he saw her [Zeena] preparing to go away, he was seized with unreasoning dread of being left alone on the farm and before he knew what he was doing he had asked her to stay there with him. He had often thought since that it would not have happened if his mother had died in spring instead of winter” (44). This quote substantiates Ethan’s regret in marrying Zeena. He believes he wouldn’t have made that same decision had it been spring time. Another force beyond Ethan’s control is seen in the introduction, it is about Ethan being forced to come home on page 5 ““Somebody had to stay and care for the folks. There warn’t ever anybody but Ethan. Fust his father – then his mother.””(25). This quote relates to when Ethan was forced from college and back to the
At some point of a kid’s life, they want to be picky about something. They want to have some control of their little world where adults are constantly telling them what to wear, what to do, and what to eat. Food, for instance, is an easy topic where kids will fight for some independence. Throwing, yelling, crying and even bribing were the essence of a battle at dinner tables. Because some parents would automatically give in to their children’s need, the kids often think they won the battle but technically they didn’t. In the story, “Picky Eater”, Julia Alvarez tells a story of her childhood experience of home meals where her and her sisters were also picky eaters, despite having healthy food served to them. Meals, she said, “at home were battlegrounds. Even if you won the dinner battle, refusing to clean your plate or drink your engrudo, you inevitably lost the war” (Alvarez 145). Battlegrounds at home can occur but it doesn’t have to end up being messy if the parents know how to handle the situation properly.
