It also ensures that fair trade practices are implemented. Moreover, these laws ensure that there is free flow of information in the marketplace (Cranston, 1978). Consumer protection laws are supposed to stop businesses from gaining an unfair advantage over competitors. At the same time, it protects all stakeholders from fraud that may be perpetrated by the business. Other than customers, these laws provide protection for the vulnerable consumers in society. The four consumer rights are the rights of safety, of information, of choice and the right to be heard (Bevans, 2011).
Before the end of the twentieth century, consumer rights were limited. This was about customer-product interaction as well as commercial producers. Consumers could not defend themselves against defective products as well as misleading advertising methods. The consumer movement began to gather momentum with greater member numbers. Things were better at the close of the 1950s whereby an aggrieved customer only had to show injury following the use of the product. This was unlike earlier times when consumers had no protection against corporate negligence. The person who drafted the Consumer Bill of Rights was Helen Ewing Nelson. The document was written during Kennedy's campaign for president where he promised to protect consumers (Howells, 2005).
