Q1] Which content theory of motivation do you consider the most suitable in present business scenario and why? ANS:- There are two theories of motivation, namely Content theories and Process theories. Content theory deals with the ‘what’ aspect of motivation. It puts down points regarding what motivates people. Its focus is to point out the factors within a person that energize, direct, sustain and stop behaviour. It focuses on the specific behaviour that motivates people. Individual needs and goals are the factors that are the basis of content theories. Maslow, Alderfer, Herzberg and McClelland are some of the proponents of content theories. These theories give reasons as to why an individual’s needs changes with time and also note down the specific factors that motivate people. These theories suggest that when there is a need deficiency in an individual, it triggers a behavioral response. In simple wors, when an individual does not receive what he thinks he needs, he will attempt to satisfy his need. These theories provide a conceptual framework for dealing with employees. Lets take a quick look at some of these theories. 1) Maslow’s hierarchy theory :- His theory is the most famous among other motivation theories. He classifies human needs into five categories or levels : • Physiological needs:- Needs for hunger, thirst, shelter, sex etc. • Safety needs:- protection from emotional and physical harm. • Social needs:- affection, belongingness, friendship etc. • Esteem
