INTRODUCTION TO SITUATIONAL LEADERSHIP Situational leadership can be defined as a concept that helps understand leadership in terms of changing environment. Situational leadership theory was developed in 1969 by Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard. This type of leadership depends upon each individual situation. This theory requires an individual to analyse the needs according to a particular situation and then act towards it. Ability or maturity of the followers are equally important than leader who leads the situation. Situational leadership theory is a part of the group of the theories which are known as contingency theories of leadership. The following are the situations where situational leadership can help solve the issues effectively. Employee development level - The situational leader will adapt himself according to the level of the subordinate. Thus none of the followers would feel too low of themselves nor feel too high of themselves. They would be able to gel well with leader. EXAMPLES SHOWING SITUATIONAL LEADERSHIP One of the finest example of the person who uses this type of leadership is captain of Indian cricket team - Mahendra Singh Dhoni. He uses situational leadership method to resolve issues. Versatility and adaptability are two characteristics which he possess in him. He always gives chance to new young players as well. He uses their potential in every game. He acts differently in world cup matches, T - 20 matches etc. He takes up challenging roles. He acts as per the situation. He has the ability to adjust and act on what is happening. Goal setting, capacity to assume responsibility, education, and experience are main factors that make him a successful leader. As a famous situational leader, his philosophy to win the match is focused on analyzing the situation. The result of the situational analysis becomes the foundation in planning the course of action.
