Contradictions In The Crucible

Arthur Miller’s The Crucible focuses on the Salem Witch Trials along with the pointing of fingers that went along with it. Miller wrote this to reflect upon what was occurring during the Red Scare in the 1940’s and 1950’s. The Crucible is written in an ironic and cynical tone mocking the Red Scare.

The play The Crucible, was written by Arthur Miller in 1953. It is a story he wrote after his own experience being accused of communism. This affected a lot of well-known people in the United States during this time, and was considered a witch hunt similar to the Salem witch hunts. Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible about a man, John Proctor, who has an affair with Abigail Williams. She catches feelings for him and tries to cast a spell on John Proctor’s wife to kill her; this gets out of hand when Abigail’s uncle catches her and some other girls dancing during the spell in the woods. Suddenly, the whole town is living in fear of who is practicing witchcraft, who could be a witch, and innocent people are killed if they don’t confess to being witches. Overall, mass fear and panic, and false accusations are seen over and over throughout the play.

Life in the 1600’s was arduous for members of Puritan society. Strict social rules, including defined gender-specific roles, mandatory attendance at church, no self-indulging activities, and limited personal freedoms, forced people to repress their feelings and opinions to maintain a good reputation. God was involved in every aspect of life, and punishment fell upon those who were seen as not doing God’s work and deviated from the norm. The Crucible, a play set during the events of the Salem Witch Trials in Massachusetts during this time, focuses on the mass hysteria which plagued the people and their reactions. A group of girls went dancing in the woods, and were caught by Reverend Parris. To avoid getting in trouble, the girls, led by Abigail Williams, claimed being the victims of witchcraft. John Proctor, who previously had an affair with Abby while she worked for his family, refused to believe the accusations of witchcraft. After Abby accuses his wife, Elizabeth, John does his best to prove her innocence, yet ultimately ends up being hanged himself. The events are tragic, and many people died as a result. Abigail’s “in the moment” survival is evident in her disregard for virtue in favor of reputation throughout The Crucible, whereas John Proctor ultimately decides integrity is more important than survival through his admission of guilt.

Throughout The Crucible, Arthur Miller uses many logical fallacies and pitfalls to describe characters and delve deeper into a character’s motives. One such example is found in hasty generalization, which is present in the play. During the first scene of the play, the community is torn over the cause of a “sickness” that has afflicted two young girls. One of the girls is the daughter of Revered Parris, and the other the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Putnam. Both girls express similar symptoms; they are unresponsive, unable to move out of bed. Though the trials have religious and supernatural implications. Miller tends to show the troubles of many flaws. Throughout the trials many characters show many flaws in different ways. Everyone has flaws. These particular flaws lead to deadly situations. The characters in The Crucible show the flaws, Greed, jealously and vengeance.

One tragedy is a result of numerous conflicts and wrongdoings. In Arthur Miller’s stunning play, The Crucible, a primary character named John Proctor has an affair with a young woman named Abigail Williams. Throughout the play, it is evident that John Proctor is a tragic figure due to the fact that he commits adultery, is unable to tell right from wrong, and betrays Salem in multiple ways.

In Salem, during the times of the Salem witch trials, the church and the people were very close. This is what led to the hysteria and chaos which was the Salem witch trials. It also led to many conflicts between the characters in this book, because anyone who was against the church was considered a criminal. Some of these conflicts were between; Abigail and the other children, Danforth and the town folk, and John Proctor with himself and his wife.

Act 2 talks about a married man named John Proctor, who is rumored to have had intimate relations with Abigail Williams. Abigail is a young girl who still believes Proctor has feelings for her even after he denies their affair in hopes to save his reputation. In addition, Proctor is married to Elizabeth, who begins to question her husband’s relationship with Abigail. During Act 2, Elizabeth loses all faith that Proctor did not have an affair when he admitted he had been alone with Abigail for a moment. Arthur Miller, Pulitzer Prize winner and author of The Crucible, uses words to feel and convey the feelings created by characters and events in his novels. Witchcraft was the fulfilling lies of the courtroom authority, and separated the Puritan society. He enhances his message of overwhelming authority with such a plethora of literary devices such as hyperbole, irony, and fallacy to explain and demonstrate the abusing of power throughout The Crucible.

There has been a statement about The Crucible being “essentially about courage, weakness and truth.” I agree that this statement is true due to the events and characters in The Crucible. The reason others believe The Crucible is described as courage, weakness and truth is also because of the characters and events that went on. Some characters have showed their weakness in certain situations when they are afraid to face the truth. The courage in the play is when the characters still fighting for either themselves or others, even when they think they have a small chance of them succeed to win their fight. Now, the truth in the story has to do with most of the characters saying the truth about the devil and the witchcraft that is going on in their town because the town and everyone who lives in it are big god believers and to them being connected to the devil or witchcraft is dangerous and a sin to them.

Marriage is the commitment between a person and someone they wish and want to be with. Many couples are prevented from being able to make that commitment. Difference is something many do not know how to comprehend and wrap their heads around. People believe that actions happen for many different reasons and tend to blame others before themselves. Some believe that the devil is doing the work in the body of someone else, and some believe that the devil does not, and some even believe in witchcraft. In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, nineteen innocent people are hung for accusations of performing witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts. A group of young girls go out into the woods which is forbidden in Salem. They are sent into a frenzy when the town’s reverend, Parris, spots them dancing in the woods. The girls are led by Abigail Williams, a young teenage girl who lives with her uncle, reverend Parris. Abigail is not the most truthful girl, which ends up causing 19 innocent people their lives. Previous to these events, Abigail was a servant in the Proctor household, but was sent off after Elizabeth Proctor found out about the affair between Abigail and her husband, John Proctor. In Abigail’s case the more lies she told, the more lives she ended.

A theme in The Crucible is that a society ruled by theocracy and status based on religion is bound to fall apart. Salem 's strict adherence to the Christian shurch is evident in everything the citizens do. They use measures of a person 's knowledge and adherence to the religion as a means of judging their character and also their status in society. They believe "God [was] provoked so grandly by such a petty cause" (121), which is why the "jails are packed" (121). If the citizen did anything to make God angry, they were punished. This is why the judges were so relentless and naïve in putting the accused women to trial and convicting them. They believed "the law, based upon the Bible, and the Bible, writ by the Almighty God,
