Michel Foucault uses the term docility to explain how control and power is achieved through discipline. “The classical age discovered the body as an object and target of power.” Generally docile means ready to accept control or instruction (submissive) He tells us a body is docile when it is subjected and trained with a lot of practise. He gives various methods about the control of the body and brings out ‘disciplines’ by the relation of docility-utility, (Foucault, 137). He tells us many gestures that are analogous to dancers. He also elaborates the idea of the soldier’s body by giving their potentials. They practise for many hours in order to get perfection while performing on stage. Considering a dance form called “Kudiyattam” the performers need to put the costume for many hours and also the moves they do in a theatre performance requires a lot practise which cannot be done by normal body. Like how soldiers practise and exercise for hours in order to be a ‘docile’ it is almost in relation to dancers as well. But the soldiers get more obedient and act according to the state. This is not the case with dancers. According to Foucault the soldiers need to more obedient and also they are subjected to domination under the control of their state (Docile bodies, 138). He also uses “Discipline is a political anatomy of detail.” This is not the same with all the performers. Dance is one among them. They get free i.e., neither diminished nor dominated by anyone, when they practise more and become more professional. They can give stage shows and get a lot of publicity. He emphasizes the correlation of body and the gesture by giving examples of handwriting by correctly holding a pen in between fingers, sitting posture, etc (docile bodies, 152). There is dance form called hip-hop which came to existence in late 70’s. People in present generations practise the dance according to the set of rules of hip-hop. But the dancers did not follow any rules for getting to this dance form; eventually he invented this dance form which has got a lot of craze till date.
