Cook County Department of Corrections Misappropriations If you’re from Chicago, you know that crime in this city, let alone the county we live in Cook County is very high. After 72 hours spent at local police departments, people who are arrested are sent to Cook County jail to be processed; her the possible charges against them, and make bail if one has been given to them. According to theatlantic.com, there are approximately 9,000 to 11,000 inmates (male and female) currently incarcerated at Cook County. The cook county sheriff’s website agrees with those numbers and adds that 100,000 people pass through their system every year. As taxpayers, we should be considered of how much money goes to fund the cook county jail. According to the Chicago …show more content…
All of rights and privileges I have listed makes it sound like jail is ok but that isn’t the case. There’s a lot of flaws to how the funds for each of them is being misappropriated. The company that make it possible for inmates to communicate with their loved ones is called Securus. Securus has come under fire for the set phone rates they’ve made. In “Cook County phone contract cost inmates and families,” Rod Wilderboer talks about how families/friends have to choose between putting money on their Securus account to receive calls from a loved one who is incarcerated. In this article, it comes to light that Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle approved the contract deal with Securus. Securus gives back more than half of the money they make from all of the calls inmates make. Calls rates are ridiculously high some can go from $5.00 to $7.00 for only 30 minutes which includes a few interruptions during each call. Compared to rates from other county jails and even state prisons these rates are too much for families and friends who want to stay in touch with their loved
Throughout time many prisoners have lost man rights not because they deserve to lose them but because they take their rights away without them knowing. Although being held in a prison they are still entitled to what the constitution has to offer for every individual in this country. Our rights and for those in jails or prisons, they hold prisoner rights as well. The authorities will treat most inmate’s unequal for the circumstances that led them there. American Civil Liberties Union also known as ACLU has been working for the rights of the prisoner’s that are in jail or prison to gain what belongs to them.
902.12 LEGAL PHONE CALLS - Inmates who have retained counsel may make legal phone calls in accordance with the following:
I’m writing to Lisa Darger, Coordinator of Sustainability from the office of Sustainability. A coordinator is who organize events, activities and arrange people in order to make sure they work together effectively. Since Darger is Coordinator, she can make all the changes and add new facilities to the recycling and littering activities. I’m wanting to discuss her about providing more trashcans here and there and also proving more recycling activities on campus. I think she will be interested in my letter because it is responsibility if there is issues about litter or recycling is occurred, and I’m sure she will be happy to help me about my issues about littering on campus.
Opponents liken the the high rates and fees to call their loved one in a correctional facility to a tax on the very poor, who can least afford it. Others worry that the telephone providers will raise the cost of intrastate calls to make up for what they lose from the rate caps on interstate
“At the end of October 2014, the total jail population was 18,668 and 2,500 of those inmates have felonies of petty crimes.” Public Safety Realignment
As of 2015, America’s jail system has been depriving people of their liberty and incarcerating those who should not be in jail. This has resulted in out-of-control government spending issues. These are funds that could be used for other things. Spending that is related to constructing and operating jails has increased by 235 percent over the past few decades. Arrests that have led to jail time have increased from 51 percent to 95 percent. This is becoming a larger threat as the way is paved for future generations. Not only does this cause issues concerning funding, but it causes other issues that can lead to more serious problems.
It is home to 2,500 inmates which is more than double what the facility was built for. The jail needs to be remodeled, but this is very expensive and will take an extensive amount of time, while the number being incarcerated is still growing at a steady pace. Most of the inmates at the Oklahoma county jail are only there awaiting trial, which the Oklahoma speaker of the house calls a debtor’s prison. He believes this is corrupt and needs to change. One idea that Oklahoma had to help with the cost of dealing with all its inmates was to make them pay for their stay. Inmates, that are ultimately convicted, are required to pay the expenses of living in the jail. Not only were they required to pay, but they were being charged even more than the cost to keep them. This is not the right method to deal with prisoners. Sure, the prison is saving a lot of money by having the inmates themselves pay for living there, but what happens when the inmate gets out of jail and has no money to his name, because all the money he worked for was going to the jail? The inmate will be back. They will most likely commit another crime when they are released. Not in all cases, but it can become a problem. If the inmates are required to pay, then what’s keeping the judge to sending them to jail. That means more money for the jail. It’s a hard problem to solve but America must face the problem of overcrowding at some point, before the system collapses in on

In handling a situation like this, the prison warden should focus on the confidential nature of the matter. The challenge in communication is getting the recipient to understand the message in a way very parallel to what is intended (Stojkovic et al., 2008). Understanding the mechanics that inspire perception is vital to effective communication. Because and individuals logic and understanding of a message is based on past experiences, which may differ from sender of message, the interpretations may be different. The prison warden should relay the messages to the individuals who have the most authority within the organization first. This way he can portray to them how to extend the message down to subordinates and in the exact form.
Today our Justice system is not perfect, but nothing is. Everything has its pros and cons, its ups and downs and its strengths and flaws. There are things that we can appreciate from how our Justice system is ran and of course there is some that we would like to change. I believe that our Justice system works but that there are things we could change or fix to make it even better.
“According to JPI, the private prison industry uses three strategies to influence public policy: lobbying, direct campaign contributions, and networking. The three main companies have contributed $835,514 to federal candidates and over $6 million to state politicians. They have also spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on direct lobbying efforts. CCA has spent over $900,000 on federal lobbying and GEO spent anywhere from $120,000 to $199,992 in Florida alone during a short three-month span this year.”
The assignment required a selection and review of five different literary sources, designating three as resources for an analytical literary review of the subject matter. The detailed review of the three selected resources is a culmination of our written critic. The first source, “Should College Athletes Be Paid?” by Tiffany Patterson, has no firm stance is taken. The article is laid out in a manner to inform readers without prior knowledge of the subject, information that would assist them towards drawing their own stance on the subject. Patterson does this by providing three pros and three cons on the topic and then allowing the reader to decide. In her article, Patterson (2016) proclaims:
Prison overcrowding is one of the most burdensome problems plaguing our criminal justice system, but privatization is not the answer. The federal prison population increased by almost 800 percent between 1980 and 2013. (Pelaez, 2016).This is a much faster rate than the most state prisons could accommodate in their own facilities. In an effort to manage the rising prison population, many states began contracting with privately operated correctional institutions to house inmates. There are patterns of abuse, especially against the mentally ill in prisons operated by for-profit companies such as the Corrections Corporations of America also known as "CCA". Many of these for profit corporations have been accused of providing abysmal care to prisoners.
New York opened its first state prison in 1788. It opened on November 28th. It
It is thought by archaeologists that the first people to settle on the Australian continent came from South-East Asia between 40,000 and 60,000 years ago (45). Over time these settlers occupied the continent with approximately 600 tribes and shared the belief of the Ancestral Beings, created the law during the Dreaming (45). Each tribe had their own identity and language and regularly moved in small nomadic groups within their tribal territory, living off the land to survive (45).
